Brushes and mops, hand-supported, driving by power; reservoir and self-feeding brushes and mops; brush sheaths.-An appliance for cleaning exterior surfaces of railway vehicles comprises a motor-driven rotary brush or mop 1 mounted at the end of a supporting-pole 60 and being provided with radial perforations 7 in communication with liquid supply pipes passing through or along the supporting pole and connected by flexible pipes to a source of liquid supply. In the construction shown, the brush consists of two sections detachably mounted on hollow shafts 3, 4, each section being partly surrounded by a .casing comprising a fixed portion 24 and a movable portion 25 connected by a spring 28 and pivoted coaxially with the sections. The inner ends of the movable portions are connected by a bolt 29 adapted to move in quadrant slots 30 provided on the fixed portions. Projecting parts 70 of the movable portions form an anti-splash guard, and when pressed against the surface under treatment move inwardly against the action of the springs 28, thereby increasing the extent of the brush openings. The fixed portions 24 are each provided with a slidable and detachable extension 31. The inner ends of the brush shafts 3, 4 pass through bearings in bosses 3 formed on a casing 9 supporting an electric motor 10, the brush and motor shafts being connected by bevelgearing. Grease may be supplied to the brush from a grease-pot 50 connected to a portion 17 of the casing 9 by means of a pipe 51, and provided with a spring-pressed piston 52, the stem of which is engaged by a spring-controlled pawl 55. The pipe 51 or a similar additional pipe may be connected to the pipes in communication with the source of liquid supply. The pole 60 is telescopic, the outer portion being provided with spring-pressed studs 66 adapted to engage in holes in the inner portion. The lower end of the pole may be supported on an attachment on a belt yoke provided with hin pads and worn by the operator.
