Abstract
178,366. Thorne, W. T. June 30, 1921. T-sockets with key wedges.-In a miner's or like pick &c. wherein a blade is removably secured by a key wedge in a T-socket fixed to the end of the helve, the blade is recessed on the sides and top to engage a reduced part of the socket A clean-faced pick is thus provided without projections of the socket from the blade. As shown, the transverse passage in the socket is in two parts b, c, the upper part being narrower than the blade d and engaging recesses in the sides and top of the blade. The key wedge f fits and moves in the lower part c, and engages the underside of the blade. It may be free, or may be attached to the socket by pins g moving in grooves h, which permit of its being turned down, as shown in dot-and-dash lines to permit of the insertion of the blade. The sides of the wedge f may be recessed to reduce its weight. The helve k is fixed by screws l or nails, and may be driven out after removal of the screws by a punch or tool passed through a hole j. A metal plate may be placed on the end of the helve to prevent the tool from penetrating the wood.
