Abstract

Combined with and convertible into tools and measuring-rods. - A walking-stick intended for surveying &c., and formed of hinged arms secured at various angles by means of a stay, comprises arms a, c, hinged together near the handle and furnished with the halves of a split sleeve k on to which a ferrule or the socket of a spade or hoe l is screwed when the arms are closed. The arms are graduated and the stick is used as a measuaing-rod when the arm c is turned to the position shown dotted. For stepping-off distances, the arms a, c are secured by a graduated stay f pivoted in a recess in the arm a and passing through a slot in the arm c where it is secured by a catch e engaging apertures or projections g in the stay. The stay f may be formed as a knife or saw and when so used is adapted to be secured in a detachable handle b by a clamp i.
