Abstract

176,820. Akimoff, N. W. Sept. 13, 1920. Testing balance of rotary apparatus.-The static and dynamic unbalance of a rotary body are determined by rotatably mounting the body in a support which allows the body to oscillate about two alternate axes provision being made for suppressing the oscillations about either axis, and also for applying - an adjustable known mass for counterbalancing. A frame 6 is hinged at 7 to a base 5 and carries on a table 8 brackets 15, 21 for supporting the body. 19 to be tested. Adjustable springs 12 are provided on either side of the hinges 7 for varying the natural-period of oscillaticn of the frame 6, and adjustable weights 10 may be clamped to rods 9 to vary the moment of inertia' of the frame 6. Screws 14 may be operated to prevent oscillation of the frame 6 when desired. The bracket 15 supports grooved rollers 16 on which rests a flange 17 on the shaft 18 of the body 19. At the other end, the shaft 18 rests on rollers 20 mounted in a bracket 21 pivoted to a base part 23 secured to the table 8. Adjustable springs 24 are provided for varying the natural period of oscillation about the pivot 22, and screws 29 for preventing these oscillations when desired. Adjustable weights 27 are mounted on extensions 26 of the bracket 21 in order to enable its moment of inertia to be varied. The shaft is rotated by a belt from on electric motor 30. For counterbalancing, a carrier. 35 is provided having two screws which are clamped against the shaft 18. In use, the body is mounted as shown with the carrier attached to the shaft. Oscillation about the pivot 22 is prevented by moving the screws 29. The frame 6 and body are now allowed to oscillate about the axis 7 and the carrier is adjusted both angularly and by relative movement of the screws until the dial gauge 42 indicates no vibration. Static balance is then attained. After the body 19 has been treated for this by removal or addition at the requisite place of the correct mass, it is again inserted in the device, vibration about the pivots 7 being prevented. Oscillation is now allowed about the pivot 22 and the carrier adjusted until the gauge 42 indicates no oscillation. The body is then balanced dynamically. Specification 118,657 is referred to.
