176,171. Armstrong, W., and Patterson, R. Dec. 17, 1920. Cleaning externally.-Mechanical apparatus for circumferentially scraping the external surface of a boiler 6 comprises a number of scrapers 1 movable by flexible members soch as chains, ropes &c. 3, which pass round the lower surface of the boiler, through channels made in the setting-blocks, near the top of the external flues. The scrapers 1 are connected by thin straps 2 bridging the plate-joints and rivet, heads. The chains 3 may be continuous or their ends, which pass over chain-wheels 4 carried on rotary shafts 5 adjustably mounted in brackets 8, may be provided with weights 10 to maintain the scrapers in contact with the boiler. The scrapers may be given a reciprocatory movement by means of the shafts 5.
