Abstract

176,037. Reed, G. H. Oct. 9, 1920. Safety-valves.-The valve member of a safetyvalve is surrounded by an annular deflector having a lost motion connection with it and adapted to be acted on by the escaping steam to give the valve member a blow in the opening or opening and closing directions. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the deflector d co-operates with an upstanding rib a<1> surrounding the valve seat a and has projections d<1>, d<2> adapted to engage alternately a projection b' on the valve member b. A second rib and deflecting groove may surround the first and the lip of the deflector may contact with the casing surrounding the seat to prevent impact in the closing direction. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the deflector has a depending skirt provided with downwardly inclined perforations and in a further modification the rib a<1> is extended upward and has upwardly inclined perforations. The deflector may work between the back of the valve member and an abutment on the valve spindle. The back of the member d may be formed as a piston adapted to work in a cylindrical guide.
