Milling-cutters, sharpening.-The teeth of a milling-cutter n are ground on their peripheral surfaces, whereby they are sharpened and backedoff in one operation, by a grinding-wheel e, the cutter being oscillated under the control of a templet t so that the teeth are ground to the correct form. The grinding-wheel is journaled in a bracket b mounted on a standard a, which also carries an inclined slide g movable by means of a screw g<1> and carrying a copy-disc or segment h, which acts as an abutment for the templet. The inclination of the slide is adjustable, and the slide is set parallel to the cutter-holder bed r. The cutter-holder k is mounted on a slide m carried by a bed and movable thereon to feed the cutter, and the bed is secured to a pawl o rotatable in an angle-bracket p carried by a slide q. This slide is movable on the inclined bed r and is pressed up towards the grinding-wheel by a spring s or by a weight. The bed r is movable along an horizontal bed j by rack-and-pinion mechanism operated by a hand-wheel j<1>. The pivot o carries the templet t, which is pressed against the copy-disc h. The teeth of the cutter are located by a finger 5. The cutter-holder, Figs. 4 and 5, comprises two side members y slotted at z and having projecting bosses 1 on which the cutter is mounted; the slots allow entry of the grinding-wheel to operate on the side faces of the cutter. The templet t is shaped to correspond with the form of the cutter, and as shown in Fig. 12, has sloping shoulders 4, which operate to move the cutter away from the grinding-wheel when the cutter is oscillated beyond the extent necessary to complete the sharpening. In operation, the cutter is oscillated, with the holder and the pivot o, by means of a handle o<1>, the templet moving the cutter to give the required shape to the teeth. The form of the teeth may be varied by extending or retracting the slide y by means of the screw g<1>; such extension or retraction causes a corresponding movement of the slide g and the parts carried thereby.
