Abstract

174,609. Trotzer, Z. Nov. 24, 1920. Heating by electricity. -In an electric water heater comprising a receptacle 1 fitted with a heating body 3, a throttled water passage 20 leading along the heating body, a bye-pass 25 which shunts the throttled passage and an electric circuit closing device 8 operated automatically by the water current in the inlet pipe 22, is provided with a valve 12, controlling the bye-pass and adapted to be closed by the pressure in the inlet pipe and to be held open by means of a member projecting from the casing 1, and means actuated by the valve to automatically close the switch 8. The valve 12 is coupled by a rod 11 to a perforated plate 10 fitted in a tube 6, mounted on the outlet of the bye-pass and carrying the contact plate 8. The valve is normally held open by a spring 9 so that cold water flows around the valve through the tube 2 and the perforated plate 10 to the outlet 26. When hot water is desired the tube 6 is pulled down so that contacts 4, 5 are joined by the switch 8 to close the heater circuit and the valve 12 on to the seat 13. Water now flows around the annular passages 14 surrounding the heating body and enters the tube 2 through the bole 17, the valve being held shut by the water pressure thereon. The flow through the heater may be regulated by means of an adjusting screw 27 in the passage 20.
