173,836. Winkelmann, R. Oct. 1, 1920. Guarding against unauthorized use. - The steering-column of a motor vehicle may be locked to its casing to prevent unauthorized use, by a key having projections adapted, when the key is placed longitudinally on the casing, to enter holes in the column and casing when coincident, the key being retained in this position by a combination ring device. As .shown, the projections k' on the key k are inserted into the apertures in the steering-column and its casing. A sleeve e, having a longitudinal groove i accommodating the key, is slid over the casing, and slotted rings a', a<2>, a<3>, a<4>, having grooves e<1>, e<2>, e<3>, e<4>, in their internal peripheries, are slid over the sleeve and projecting parts m', m<2>, m<3>, m<4>, of the key, and are then rotated to lock the key in position. The rings are held in place by collars b<1>, b<2>, having grooves and slots to accommodate the key, and operated in a similar manner to the rings. The collars and rings carry outer lettered and numbered rings, respectively, capable of being secured in a variety of positions on the inner rings to permit alteration of the code. The securing-device comprises thin code-denoter rings pressed into grooves u<1>, u<2>, u<3>, u<4>, and each provided with a metal upright adapted to project through one of a number of slots in the inner rings and engage in one of a number of slots in the outer rings x<1>, x<2>, x<3>, x<4>. A rod w<1> is carried bv circular-headed screws w<2> so as to be either pivotal on one, or rotatable between both, and carries a metal blade contacting with grooves cut between the numerals for facilitating alignment thereof. A stop f, secured to the steering- column casing, serves as an abutment for one end of the lock.
