Abstract
173,592. Bunker, A. C. Sept. 30, 1920. Cutting tubes obliquely to their length. -Apparatus for cutting strip on the bias from a tube of fabric comprises a fixed drum on which the fabric tube is carried and from which it is drawn bv a motordriven roll continuously rotating round the drum. The cutter is also independently driven and is carried by a rotating ring mounted concentrically with the drum, two sets of feed rollers being carried by the fixed casing of the rotating ring. Supported by a pillar 1 is the fixed drum 4 on which the fabric tube is placed and revolubly mounted on which is a toothed wheel 5. Secured to or formed in one with the wheel 5 is a sleeve 24 fixed to which is the spindle 25 of the take-up roll 26, the spindle being provided with a conical bearing 27 for the roll. Secured to the part 27 is a toothed wheel 33 which gears with a pinion 33a driven by an electric motor 34. Also carried by the hub 24 is a device adapted to counterbalance the increasing weight of the roll 26 and comprising rods 28 on which slides a weight 29 moved thereon by a screwed shaft 30 carrying a star-wheel 31 moved at each revolution of the wheel 5 by a projection 32 on the pillar 1. Secured on a standard 10 is a cylinder 11 within which is supported an annular toothed wheel 12 bearing a motor-driven rotary cutter 14 set at an angle to the drum and co-operating with a groove therein. The wheels 5, 12 are driven. respectively by pinions 6, 15 connected by chain-and-sprocket gearing to the main shaft 7. Situated on each side of the cylinder 11 are sets of radially arranged feed rollers 19, 20 connected by universal joints and driven by shafts 21 and bevel gearing 22 from the shaft 7. To keep the fabric taut as it passes the cutter, the rollers 19 are made slightly larger than the rollers 20. As a result of the combined actions of the various parts the fabric is cut off from the tube at an inclination of 45. To compensate for the increasing size of the cloth on the roll 26, the speed of the motor 34 is decreased by means of a rheostat 35 rotated by worm gearing from the shaft 7. In a modification the drum 4 may be made hollow and perforated to permit the escape of compressed air or other gas supplied from a pipe 41.
