Abstract

173,080. Coleman, M. Sept. 27, 1920. Clockwork-actuated valves.-Relates to clockwork-operated mechanism for turning on and turning off a gas or water valve at predetermined times. The device is described for operating switches and as so applied consists of " on " and " off " actuating rods d carrying transverse pins e<1> whereby the rods are retained in an inoperative position in cam slots in cylinders c, c<1> against the action of springs, and tripping mechanisms consisting of attachments to the alarm winding mechanisms of ordinary alarm clocks which engage the pins and release the actuating rods to move the switch into the " on " or " off " position. The tube c, Fig. 6, of the closing mechanism is formed with slots shaped as shown, and normally the rod d is retained by the engagement of its pin e<1> with the cut-away part h against the torsion and compression of a spiral spring connected at one end to the pin and at the other anchored adjustably for tension purposes in one of a number of slots e<5> in an end cap c<3> of the tube. When the bent attachment i on the closing alarm clock engages the pin e<1>, the rod and pin are first rotated bringing the bent operating end of the rod over the switch arm, then the pin is released so that the compressed spring may depress the rod to close the switch and finally further rotated to carry the inoperative end of the rod away from the switch arm. The circuit breaking mechanism is similar except that the operating rod moves upwards.
