Machines for coding; types. - A machine for - transmitting telegraphic and like messages in code has a standard keyboard, operation of which in clear serves mechanically to transmit, or to embody, in a form suitable for transmission, characters in a code which preferably varies automatically and can be altered at will. The cryptographic typewriter described in Specification 122,886 is modified by replacing or supplement. ing the cylinder from which the coded impression is taken by a cylinder 3 having rows of characters mutually displaceable, as described in the said Specification, but bearing representations of the characters in the morse or other systems used in telegraphy. Such representations may be arranged as electrical contacts across which a wiper 7 may be drawn vertically, to complete the line circuit, by a bar 9 which lies across the ends of the keys 8. The message is typed in clear by means of the type-cylinder 1 and hammer 2 and may also be typed in code bv means of an additional cylinder. Specification 152,625 also is referred to.
