Abstract

172,000. Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges. Nov. 26, 1920, [Convention date]. Electrolytic meters.-A meter for telephone systems comprises a metallic conductor of predetermined dimensions immersed in an electrolyte and adapted to be disintegrated by a given quantity of electricity. The figure shows an example in which a copper wire 2 is sealed in the bottom of a glass concontainer 5 and soldered at its other end to a spring 3 held under tension. After a given quantity of electricity has passed, the wire 2 becomes so weak that it is drawn out of the electrolvte by the spring 3, thereby breaking the circuit. An attendant then inserts a new conductor, the number of replacements fixing the charge to be made. The apparatus is arranged in a local circuit which is closed for the duration of the conversation, and the strength of the current in the circuit may be varied according to the rate of charge. The cell may be connected in shunt across a signalling device which gives an indication when the shunt circuit is broken.
