522,140. Detecting faults. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and TURLEY, T. G. Dec. 7, 1938, No. 35666. [Class 37] An instrument for testing lines in communication cables for continuity, earths, and short-circuits, and to identify individual wires comprises a telephone receiver in series with an interrupter so that a note is heard when a unidirectional potential is applied. An electromagnet b has an armature a and is connected to a battery e through a contact c<1> so that the armature a is vibrated when a switch d is closed, thereby making and breaking contact at c<2>. A potential is applied at any desired point to a line in a cable to be identified. A terminal n<2> is earthed and a terminal n<1> applied to lines in the cable in succession as by pricking through the insulation. A tone is heard in a telephone f when connection is made to the desired line. Rectifiers j, k are arranged so that current will only flow through the apparatus if the potential of the terminal n<1> is positive with respect to earth. An inductance h, condenser g, and resistance are arranged as shown. A key m, is connected across the terminals to permit signalling to a distant point.
