Abstract

171,768. Elcock, R. Aug. 19, 1920. Guarding against unauthorized use.-The bolt of a permutation lock has to be disengaged from one of a series of gated rings, nested within each other, by being pushed forwards. before the rings can be set to allow the bolt to be withdrawn. Fig. 1 illustrates the lock applied to the steering- pillar of a motor-vehicle. The bolt 13 slides in the hollow screw 4 and the dial plate 11, mounted in a seating 3 secured to the steering-column 1. Pivoted on the bolt is a projecting member 17, which prevents withdrawal of the bolt when obstructed by the rings 18, 26, 25. Each of these rings has a gate, and when set in a predetermined position, the member 17 can pass through them. The rings are mounted one within the other, the outer one 18 being fixed to, or integral with, the casing and projecting inwards beyond the edge of the other two, its projecting-edge having false gates 19 cut in it. The bolt is rotatable by means of the engagement of its square head 20 in a hole in the dial plate 11. To set the rings for releasing the bolt, the member 17 is disengaged from the notch 19 in which it is resting, by pressing the bolt in the locking direction. The dial plate 11 can then be rotated, a stud on it engaging a stud 31 on the ring 25, and a lug 32 on this engaging a stud 33 on the ring 26. Turning the plate 11 by a certain amount first in one direction and then in the other, sets the gates 28, 27 of the rings 26, 25 under that, 24, of the fixed ring 18, and a final turn of the plate brings the member 17 into position to pass through the gates, allowing the bolt to be withdrawn. The member 17 can tilt forwards, enabling the bolt to be shot in any position of the rings. Its shoulder 40 engages a recess in the flange 39 of the bolt to resist pressure in the unlocking direction. Fig. IV shows a modification in which the bolt is non-rotatable and the outer ring 18 rotatable. In this case, the ring 25 is made fast to the dial plate 11 so that the rings are set in the same manner as before.
