Abstract

169,189. Sherman, A. E. March 17, 1920. Antiseptics.-In the process for preserving meat by means of the combined action of cooling or cold storage and an antiseptic as described in Specifications 14530/05 and 1278/06 with respect - to the use of formaldehyde as the antiseptic and in Specification 112,473 with respect to the use of stearoptenes having the empirical formula C10H14O, either alone or with the oleoptenes uaturally occurring with them, the antiseptics used are the phenolic, ketonic, aldehydio, alcoholic, and etheric bodies, acids and esters which are normal constitutents of essential oils, or the isomers, homologues, and derivatives thereof, other than the stearoptenes or mixtures of stearoptenes and oleoptenes mentioned above, the conditions of storage being such that the bodies are not changed otherwise than by atmospheric oxidation. A number of examples of such bodies are given. Essential oils may be used for the purpose, terpenes and other hydrocarbons being removed if necessarv. Oil of birch and oil of wintergreen are mentioned as especially suitable, and methyl salicylate as a synthetically-produced equivalent of these oils. The substances may be used singly or in association one with another or with other antiseptics such as thymol. The antiseptics used may be vaporized or atomized. Solutions or emulsions of the substances, to which soaps or protective colloids may be added, may also be employed.
