Blowpipe burners.-For subaqueous working, an oxy-acetylene blowpipe burner is surrounded by a casing 1 having internal spiral vanes arranged so that compressed air supplied to the rear of the casing is caused to issue around the nozzle 6 with a cyclonic or spiral effect and with the greatest pressure at a point below the nozzle so as to form a. water-freed space around the flame. For mounting the casing, a back-plate 4 is attached to the burner by means of a union-nut 5. Rotatably carried by the back-plate 4 is an internallyscrewed ring 3 by means of which the casing 1 may be adjusted longitudinally with respect to the burner without being rotated relatively to the back-plate. Compressed air is supplied to the casing by a, pipe 23 and is given a, whirling motion by the spiral-vanes 9, 11 formed on the internalsurface of the casing. A cup-shaped cap 2 screws on to the end of the casing and the cap may have a series of receses on its outer face or may have projections thereon for preventing the said face from being placed flat against the work.
