Bristles, fixing; brush stocks; collapsable brushes. -A broom or like device comprises a fixed body portion b carrying a handle d, and two outer portions a, c hinged or pivoted to the central portion, means slidable in or on the handle being provided to bring the outer portions towards or away from operative position. In the construction shown, the outer portions are connected bv links h to a rod k slidably mounted in the handle and provided with teeth adapted to engage one side of a hole in the cap l to lock the outer portions in the desired position. The handle is slotted for the passage of the links h. Each section of the broom is preferably provided with a detachable bristle-carrier comprising a flanged perforated plate m, Fig. 5, containing a number of bars in pairs, each pair o, o<1> being provided with corresponding recesses for holding the bristles. In a modification, the outer portions of the broom may be pivotally connected to the central portion so as to be movable in a plane perpendicular to the handle. Instead of a rod mounted slidably in the handle, a sleeve may be provided, the sleeve being locked in the desired position, e.g. the handle may have a number of holes adapted to be engaged by a spring-controlled pin on the sleeve.
