Abstract
168,484. Brougham, F. J., (Service Machines Co.). July 12, 1920. Feeding webs.-In stamp-affixing machines of the kind which are held in the hand and rolled along the surface to be stamped, the stamps are fed from the roll R to the affixing-roller 14 by a reciprocating clamp. The feeding-clamp comprises two sliding plates 38, 34 adapted to be retracted independently by springs and to be advanced together by a projection 31 on one side of the affixing-roller engaging a lug 30 on a slide to which the plate 34 is attached. A part 35 of the plate 34 is bent upwards at a sharp angle, and during a feeding movement the stamp strip is clamped in the corner formed by this angle by the edge of the plate 38; the sharp bending of the stamp strip causes a line of perforations therein always to occupy this corner, so that irregularities in the widths of the stamps are compensated for. The retractile movement of the plate 38 is arrested by the plate engaging the line of perforations at which the stamp strip is bent. When the feeding-clamp is retracted, backward movement of the stamp strip is prevented by spring- actuated pawls 42, and a roller 37 carried above the feeder draws a length of the strip from the roll R ready for feeding during the return movement of the feeder. When a single stamp has been affixed, further movement of the affixing- roller is prevented by its projection 31 engaging a lever 44 which is locked by interengaging hooks 46, 47, Fig. 10. Then, upon raising the machine from the stamped surface, a spring 52 rocks the lever 44 and rotates the roller 14 slightly backwards, and the projection 31 engages the spring tail 50 of the hook 47 and rocks this hook sufficiently to remove it from the path of the hook 46, in which position it is retained bv a friction washer 51. The roller 14 is thus automatically freed for the next operation.
