Abstract

167,542. Stamm, M., Tucker, H., and Peltz, M. J. May 4, 1920. Casings; motors, cooling.-Relates to air-cooled electric motors and particularly such as are used for producing a partial vacuum or the reverse for the operation of a player-piano or organ, or other like device, and consists in mounting on the armature shaft two fans adapted to draw air into the motor casing from opposite directions and each to exert a pull on the armature in opposition to the pull exerted by the other, the two fans being arranged in series to drive the air through the motor casing. The motor casing 5 is formed with two openings 29, 30. one communicating with the atmosphere and the other with the pipe 83 from the suction-operated device. The air drawn in through the opening 30 by the fan 42 is forced along passages 44, Fig. 3, and after joining the air drawn in by the fan 41 through the passages 29 passes through the motor and thence out by the openings 45, 80, 81. The inner end of the pipe 83 is normally closed by a valve plate 86 carried by a spring 87. A screen 88 of gauze or cloth filters the air as it passes through to the motor. The motor casing 5 is suspended within an outer casing 2 by sound-deadening disclike diaphragms 70, 71, of rubberized duck or other fabric. The outer portions of the diaphragms 70, 71 are clamped between the flanges 61, 62 on the central portion 60 of the casing 2 and the end heads 63, 64. Sound-mufflers in the form of felt pads 77, 82 are provided where the air enters and leaves the outer casing, the muffler 77 also acting as a filter for the air. The motor casing 5 is preferably formed in four separable sections 6, 7, 8, 9 secured together by screws.
