Abstract

167,213. Stevenson, G. E. March 25, 1920. Broaching; gear-cutting. -A number of teeth are cut simultaneously in the circumference of a blank by a ring of cutters which are fed radially by successively decreasing amounts. A number of blanks 228 are carried on a hexagonal spindle 286 held in seats 285 by means of a clamp 288 which is closed by a handle 296<1> containing a spring bolt 296<11>. The blanks are reciprocated to and from a bed-plate 244 on which is a carrier wherein evenly-spaced cutters 230 are held in clamps 231. An adjusting-screw 235 inside each cutter bears on a stop 236 carried by the clamp, and each clamp is pivoted to a bar 233, carrying a roller 239 which engages a cam 240. The cams are attached to a ring 242 which is rotated by a pinion 311, so as to feed the cutters inwards. The carrier may be locked in different positions by means of a bolt 251 to provide for cases where the number of cutters is less than the number of teeth to be cut. A modified cutter 266 is fixed by studs 268 to a bar 263 sliding in grooves in a block 246" mounted in the carrier 243. The position of the cutter is accurately adjusted by means of a bolt. 281 and set-screws 279. With this cutter, the cam-ring is given a small partial reverse rotation to retract the cutters before each return stroke. The feeding and retracting movements are obtained by the action of two pawls engaging ratchet-wheels 313, 314, one pawl having an adjustable fence to reduce its effective amplitude. After the cam-ring has been rotated through the angle subtended by one cam 240, the feed is stopped by the action of a ratchet-driven cam 333 which releases a bolt 335 and locks the slide 318 by means of which the ratchet-wheels 313, 314 are driven. In addition, the pinion 311 driving the cam ring is mounted on a hand-adjusted carrier 341 so that it may be disengaged from the teeth on the ring 242. This action, by means of a link 350, operates clutch mechanism to rotate the ring 242 back to its original position.
