Abstract
155,663. Robinson, M. W., and Lithgoe, J. Oct. 2, 1919. Shaping.-In a shaping-machine for cutting polygonal portions on the whole or part of a shaft or bar, the latter is held by a headstock 2 and tailstock 3, and gives an intermittent motion between each stroke of the transversely-reciprocated tool 24, preferably by a segmental gear 10, on a continuously revolving shaft 9, engaging a gear 8 in the headstock 2. The headstock spindle is locked between each movement by means such as a disk 17 having notches with which a pivoted pawl 16 is forced into engagement by a cam 11 on the shaft 9 acting on a roller 14, a spring being provided to draw the parts out of engagement during the rotation of the work. In a modification, Fig. 4, the latch 30 is pressed into engagement with the disk 17 by a spring 31, and moved out of engagement by the cam 11 and lever 32. The tool slide 25 is operated by the usual connecting rod and crank 21, and the saddle 6 fed by a screw 26 and ratchet gear 29.
