To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CLARENCE M. QHAr- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terryville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turret Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction oft and mechanism for operating the turrets oi hand or automatic lathes or screw machines and similar machine tools in which the forming tools are intermittently revolved and reciprocated to bring them into line with and up to the work to be acted upon.
The object of the invention is to so design and the elements that the structure will be compact, light, rigid and durable, the tools will be firmly and accurately held in such positions that there will be no fouling by chips and are accessible for adjustment and cleaning, and the rotative and reciprocatory movements, which may be varied in time and length according to the number or and kind or tools in active use and work to be accomplished, will be rapid yet without shock or jar, thereby prcducing a unitary tool holding and feeding mechanism for machines of the class mentioned which is very accurate and eiiicient.

The tool carrying turret 10 is secured to a tubular'shatt 11 which is rotarily mounted in a carriage 12. The turret can be provided with any desired number of openings for receiving the shanks of the tools. The turret illustrated has five tool openings 13. These tool openings are cylindrical holes formed through projections 14: that extend from the periphery of the turret, the outer ends of the projections being slitted and provided with screws 15 for drawing the parts together upon the shanks of the tools thrust in the openings. With this construction the tools are held in such manner that they are accessible and the entire interior surfaces of the openings fit the shanks of the tools so that when the screws are tightened the tools will be securely and accurately clamped without marring the shanks; The openin 's through the turret projections allow chips to pass out through the shanks of such tools as hollow mills and box tools.
Set into the back face of the turret is a hardened lock plate 16 containing sockets 17 corresponding in number to the tool openings, for the entry of the point end of the turret locking bolt 18, the other end of which has a grooved spool 19. The lock bolt is normally thrust forward to locking position by a spiral spring 20 located in a socket in the carriage about the bolt and is withdrawn from looking position at the proper time by the engagement with the spool of a yoke plate 21, the yoke being connocted with two tubular plungers 22 that are located in sockets in the turret carriage, one each side oi the locking bolt, and contain spiral springs 23.
On the tubular turret spindle is a nut 24 which is adjusted to retain the spindle in place lengthwise in the carriage. Fitted on the spindle outside of this nut is a sleeve 25 hearing a gear wheel 26. Outside of the sleeve and gear is a washer 27 and outside oi the washer is a collar 28, washer 29 and nut 30. The nut 30 when screwed up clamps these parts in place, the gear wheel loosely fitting on the sleeve. in the gear is a key 31 inspecting and adjusting the tools.
which is thrust by a spring 32 into a locking socket in the sleeve for keying the gear to the sleeve which is fixed to the shaft. Projecting from the key is a pin 33 by means of which the key may be lifted to disengage it from the sleeve. The collar 28 has a flattened portion 34 over which the pin 33 projects. When it is desired to release the turret shaft from the gear the collar 28 is turned. This lifts the pin and raises the key out of the notch, then, the lock bolt being withdrawn, the turret is free to be rotated by hand for the purpose of When connection is again made by turning the collar back and allowing the key to drop inward, the elements will be in correct relation as there is but one notch for the key to enter.
Fastened on the face of the gear 26 and located in an annular groove in the face thereof are wedge cams 35 that at the proper time as the gear rotates engage a roll 36 on an arm 37 that is clamped to the yoke plate 21 by a nut 38. When a wedge cam engages the roll the plungers 22 are pushed inward and the springs 23 placed under tension. There may be any number of wedge cams attached to the gear, the number depending on the number of tools to be used and the number of times the turret is to be locked during each cycle of the machine. If a station is to be skipped the wedge cam for that station is removed. A latch 39 pivoted on a projection 40 from the side of this carriage engages the end of the roll arm 37 and normally holds the plungers with the springs under tension until such time as it is desired to withdraw the lock bolt from the lock plate on the turret. A spring 41 causes the hooked end of the latch to engage with the roll arm.
The turret carriage is adjustably connected to a clove-tail slide 12 by clamp bolts 43, the heads of which lie in T-shaped slots 44 in the slide,yvl1ile the shanks pass through slots in the slid-e and holes in the base of the carriage. The slide is adapted to move back and forth along a guideway in the top of the machine frame 45, a tapering adjustable gib 46 of common form being arranged on one side of the guideway to ensure proper fit. The gib may be adjusted by means of a screw 47 turned into the frame with its head engaging inclined grooves in the side of the gib. Extending through a slot in the slide is a stud 48, on the lower end of which beneath the top of the frame is a roll 49 that is adapted to be engaged by cams 50, of which there may be any desired number and of the required contour, that are adjustably secured to the periphery of the cam drum 51 of the machine with which the turret is used. The stud 18 has a clamping nut 52 on its upper end and it has a menace square middle section 53 that fits a slot on the under side of the slide to keep it from turning. When the nut is loosened the stud is free to be adjusted to compensate for the hight of the cams used and the work being operated upon so that the slide may advance to a certain point even though cams of varying hight be used.
Meshing with the gear 26 is a pinion 54 on a shaft 55 that is supported by a bracket 56 which extends out from one side of the turret carriage. On this shaft is an elliptical gear 57 meshing with which is an elliptical gear 58 that is loose on a shaft 59 which is supported at one end by bearings in the bracket 56. hastened to the elliptical gear 58 is a clutch member 60. Movable on a squared section 61 of the shaft 59 is a clutch member 62 to which is fastened a grooved spool 63. Engaging this spool is a stud 64 that projects upward from one end of a lever 65 pivotally mounted on the under side of the bracket 56. The other end of this lever is forked and engages the spool 19 on the end of the turret lock bolt. The shaft 59 slides through a bearing in a bracket 66 that is secured to the top of the frame. The shaft 59 is free to reciprocate through this bearing and through a pinion 67 which is keyed to the shaft. Meshing with this pinion is a gear 68 which is to be constantly driven by suitable intervening gearing from the'drive shaft of the machine to which the turret mechanism is applied. By means of this mechanism the clutch member 62 is constantly rotated and when it is engaged with the clutch member 60 the meshing elliptical gears and meshing pinion and gear impart a rotary movement to the turret. The elliptical form of gears provide a fast and slow motion between each tool station and cause the turret to slow down as the locking bolt'reaches and enters locking socket for holding the turret with a tool in line with the work. As a result of this the indexing mechanism may be run very rapidly and .yet the movements will be easy and smooth. The clutch members are engaged by the lever 65 when the plungers 22 are forced out by the springs 23 and the lock bolt disengaged from the turret. This movement is very quick and is so timed that the bolt is withdrawn before the clutch is engaged.
The latch 39 is oscillated for releasing the spring plungers by means of a rocker arm a 69 that extends upward from a rock shaft 70. This shaft at one end is supported by a bearing in a bracket '71 projecting from the side of the turret carriage and at the other end by a bearing in a bracket 72 secured to the bed the shaft having a free longitudinal movement through the latter bearing and through a. collar 73 held by the bearing and splined to the shaft. Projecting menace outward from this collar is a lug '74, and underneath and adapted to engage withthis lug isa bolt? 5 that is vertically movable in a sleeve 76 set in the frame. The lower end of this bolt is adapted to be engaged by one or more dogs 77 that are fastened to the periphery of the cam drum. Holes 78 are arranged entirely around the cam drum so that any number of dogs maybe located in any desired position about the cam drum. When a dog lifts thebolt the rock shaft is turned so that the rocker arm will engage and cause the latch to release the plungers and allow the springs to draw out the looking bolt. This as described causes. the lever to close the clutch and the elliptical gears to rotate the turret. When a cam on the gear attached to the turret shaft engages the roll the plungers are pushed back so as to place the springs under tension and the latch engaged to so hold them. The locking bolt, however, remains out with the clutch engaged until a locking socket in the lock plate on the turrent comes opposite the end of the bolt, then the bolt under the thrust of its spring moves forward first causing the lever to release the clutch and then looking the turret. The timing is such that the clutch is released just before the end of the bolt enters a locking socket and the end of the bolt and the socket are tapered so as to center and hold the turret in exact working position. The locking bolt is withdrawn by the two strong springs and thrust in by the single center spring. Thisimparts a very quick movement and saves time to no small degree in indexing the turret. The two outside springs which withdraw the bolt are compressed by the engagement of the cams on the gear with the roll on the arm fastened to the plunger yoke, the rollbeing located centrally in direct line with the bolt. When it is desired to have the turret indexed two or more positions the locking bolt is held away from the locking ring, thus eliminating friction and preventing unnecessary wear to the locking pin and plate. This is accomplished by omitting one or more of the cams that compress the withdrawing springs and allowing the yoke to be held out by the springs.
The provision for longitudinally adjusting the turret carriage upon the'slide eliminates the necessity of overhang of the turret or the turret tools in relation to the slide and the work being operated upon, thus contributing to the accuracy of the work accomplished. Provision is made for indexing the turret one or more positions at any period during the cycle of the machine by the location of the dogs secured on the end of the cam drum. The dogs are held by screws which pass through them into the drum and they operate, as stated, to cause the latch to release the springs which pull out the bolt and throw in the clutch and start the rotation of the turret. With this arrangement the turret may be indexed at any point in the forward or return movement of the slide, depending upon the work being done.
The turret as shown may be provided with a positive high or low speed drilling attachment. For this purpose a shaft 79 is passed through the tubular turret shaft and in front of the turret this shaft has a gear 80 designed to mesh with a pinion 81 on a tool holding bushing 82 located in one of the tool holding openings in the turret. The other end of the shaft carries a gear 83 meshing with which is a gear 84 on the constantly rotating clutch shaft 59. This mechanism may be used when it is desired to drill very rapidly at one station, and the speed may be varied by changing the ratios of the gears 83 and 84:.
The invention claimed is 1. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage adjustably secured on the slide, a turret with tool openings and locking sockets rotatably supported by the carriage, means for locking and releasing the turret mounted on and movable with the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret mounted on and movable with the carriage, and a connection between said means whereby the action of the locking and releasing means controls the action of the rotating means.
2. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reclproeating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with tool openings and looking sockets, rotatably supported by the carriage, means including elliptical gears and a clutch for rotating the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, means for locking and releasing the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, and means for throwing the clutch actuated by said turret locking means, mounted on and movable with the carriage.
3. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with tool openings and looking sockets, rotatably supported by the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, and turret locking and releasing means including a bolt mounted on the carriage, a spring for engaging the bolt with the turret, springs for disengaging the bolt from the turret, means for compressing the springs, a latch for retaining the springs under tension, means for releasing the latch, and a connection between the bolt and the turret rotating means whereby the move ment of the bolt connects and disconnects the turret rotating means. said turret con- &
trolling means being mounted on and movable with the carriage.
4:. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with tool openings and looking sockets, rotatably supported by the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, and turret locking and releasing means, including a bolt mounted on the carriage, a spring for engaging the bolt with the turret, springs for disengaging the bolt from the turret, adjustable means for compressing the springs, a latch for retaining the springs under tension, adjustable means for releasing the latch, and a connection between the bolt and the turret rotating means whereby the movement of the bolt connects and disconnects the turret rotating means, said turret controlling means being mounted on and movable with the carriage.
5. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with tool openings and look ing sockets, rotatably supported by the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, a bolt arranged parallel with the axis of the turret for locking and releasing the turret, springs for engaging the bolt with and disengaging the bolt from the turret, and adjustable means for placing said springs under tension, said bolt and its controlling means being mounted on and movable with the carriage.
6. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with tool openings and locking sockets, rotatably supported by the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, a bolt for locking and releasing the turret, a pair of springs for disengaging the bolt from the turret, a single springfor engaging the bolt with the turret, said bolt and springs being mounted on the carriage parallel with the axis of the turret, and means for placing said springs under ten sion, mounted on and movable with the carriage.
7. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with tool openings and locking sockets, rotatably supported by the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, a bolt for locking and releasing the turret, a pair of springs for disengaging the bolt from the turret, a single spring for engaging the bolt with the turret, said bolt and springs being mounted on the carriage parallel with the axis of the turret, and means including wedge cams for placing the springs under tension, mounted on and movable with the carriage.

A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a tubular shaft rotatably supported by the carriage', a turretrwith tool openings and locking sockets secured to the shaft, means for rotating the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, means for locking and releasing the turret, mounted on and movable with the carriage, a high speed shaft extending through said tubular turret shaft, gearing at the rear of the turret positively connecting the high speed shaft with a constantly rotating driving shaft of the machine for rotating said high speed shaft, and gearing at the front of the turret adapted to connect the high speed shaft with a tool arranged in a tool opening in the turret.

10. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with radial projections, rotatably supported by the carriage, said projections having tool openings parallel with the axis of the turret and slots in their outer edges, clamp screws passing through the slotted sections of said projections, and coacting means for intermittently locking, releasing and rotating the turret at various longitudinal positions, mounted on and movable with the carriage.
11. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret with radial projections, rotatably supported by the carriage, said projections having tool openings parallel with the axis of the turret and slots in their outer edges, clamp screws passing through the slotted sections of said projections, a ring smaller in diameter than the turret set in the back face thereof, said ring having locking sockets corresponding in number to the radial projections in the turret, and coacting means for intermittently rotating and locking the turret at various longitudinal positions, mounted on and movable with the carriage.
12. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage, a turret with radial projections, rotatably supported by the carriage, said projections having tool openings parallel with the axis of the turret and slots in their outer edges, clamp screws passing through the slotted sections of said projections, and coacting means for intermittently locking, releasing and rotating the turret at various longitudinal positions, mounted on and movable with the carriage.
13. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage with a circular thrust surface at its forward end, mounted on the slide, a turret with radial projections having slotted tool openings, rotatably supported by the carriage, an annular plate with looking sockets set in the back of the turret and bearing against the circular thrust surface of the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, and means mounted on the carriage and adapted to engage said annular plate for locking the turret between its movements.
14. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage with a circular thrust surface at its forward end, mounted on the slide, a turret rotatably-supported by the carriage, an annular plate with looking sockets set in the back of the turret and bearing against the circular thrust surface of the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, and means mounted on the carriage and adapted to engage said annular plate for locking the turret between its movements.
15. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage with a circular thrust surface projecting from its forward end, a turret with radial projections, rotatably supported by the carriage, said projections having tool openings parallel with the axis of the turret and slots in their outer edges with clamp screws passing through the slotted sections of said projections, an annular plate with locking sockets set in the back of the turret and bearing against the circular thrust surface of the carriage, means for intermittently rotating the turret, and means mounted on the carriage and adapted to engage said annular plate for locking the turret between its movements. 16. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage, a shaft rotatably mounted on the carriage, a turret with tool openings secured to the shaft, a gear mounted on the shaft, wedge cams secured to said gear, a spring bolt for locking and releasing the turret, means in line with the bolt adapted to be engaged by said cams for compressing the bolt throwing springs, and means for rotating the gear.
20. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage, a shaft rotatably mounted on the carriage, a turret with tool openings secured to the shaft, a gear mounted on the shaft, means for intermittently rotating the gear, meansfor locking and releasing the turret, and means for holding the locking means disengaged.
21. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage, a shaft rotatably mounted on the carriage, a turret with. tool openings secured to the shaft, a gear mounted on the shaft, a key for fastening the gear to the shaft, a collar and pin for disengaging said key from the shaft, and gears for rotating the shaft gear.
22. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage, a shaft rotatably mounted on the carriage, a turret with tool openings secured to the shaft, a gear mounted on the shaft, elliptical gears for rotating theshaft gear, a spring bolt for locking and releasing the turret. wedge cams mounted on the shaft gear for com pressing said springs, and means for rotat ing the gear.

A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, a carriage adjustably mounted on the slide, a shaft rotatably supported by the carriage, a turret with tool openings extending parallel with the path of the slide, secured to the shaft, a lock bolt mounted in the carriage parallel with the axis of the turret shaft, opposed spring for throwing the lock bolt, and means carried by the carriage foractuating the lock bolt, controlling the springs, and rotating the turret shaft.
26. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage, a turret rotatably mounted on the carriage, a lock bolt mounted in the carriage and adapted to engage the turret, springs for engaging and disengaging the lock bolt, a gear for rotating the turret, cams on said gear for compressing the bolt throwing springs, a latch for retaining the bolt springs under compression, elliptical gears for rotating the turret, a clutch, one member of which is connected with an elliptical gear and the other member is constantly rotated. and a lever connecting the lock bolt with the movable clutch member whereby the movements of the lock bolt control the action of the clutch.

A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a carriage, a turret rotatably mounted on the carriage, a lock bolt mounted in the carriage and adapted to engage the turret, a spring for engaging the lock bolt with the turret, tubular plungers located in the carriage, springs in the plungers and adapted to cause the plungers to withdraw the lock bolt, a gear for rotating the turret, cams on said gear for compressing the bolt throwing springs, means for re-' taining the plungers with the springs under compression, a trip for said plunger retaining means, elliptical gears for rotating the turret, a clutch, one member of which is connected with an elliptical gear and the other member is constantly rotated, and a lever connected with the lockbolt and with the movable clutch member whereby the movements of the lock bolt control the action of the clutch.

A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret rotatably mounted on the carriage, a lock bolt mounted in the carriage and adapted to engage the turret, a spring for engaging the bolt with the turret, a pair of springs for disengaging the bolt from the turret, a gear for rotating the turret, cams for compressing the lock bolt springs carried by said gear, a latch for retaining the springs under tension, a clutch for rotating the turret gear, means connecting the clutch with the lock bolt whereby the movements of the bolt control the clutch, means for constantly rotating one member of the clutch, and a cam drum with cams for reciprocating the slide and releasing the spring retaining latch.

A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a slide, a carriage mounted on the slide, a turret rotatably mounted on the carriage, a lock bolt mounted in the carriage and adapted to engage the turret, a spring for engaging the bolt with the turret, a pair of springs for disengaging the bolt from the turret, a gear for rotating the turret, cams for compressing the lock bolt springs carried by said gear, a latch for retaining the springs under tension, a trip bolt for releasing the latch, a clutch for rotating the turret gear, means connecting the clutch with the lock bolt whereby the movements of the bolt control the clutch, means for constantly rotating one member of the clutch, and a cam drum with cams for reciprocating the slide and actuating said trip bolt.
30. A tool holding and feeding mechanism comprising a reciprocatory slide, a-
carriage mounted on and movable with the slide, a shaft rotatably mounted in'the carriage parallel to the path of the slide and movable with the carriage, a turret secured to the shaft, said turret having tool openings parallel with the shaft, mechanism for reciprocating the slide, and mechanism for imparting intermittent rotatory movements to the turret shaft mounted on the carriage and movable with the carriage and slide.
