Abstract

4513. Greenwood, T. Feb. 24. Gear - cutting.- Machines of t h e type described in Specification 17,028/06, are arranged to generate the tooth curve. The cutter-holder reciprocates t a n - gentially to t h e blanks through a distance equal to the pitch, while the blanks receive an intermittent rotation through one tooth space, thus effecting the indexing. Rows of cutters, provided with square notches 5' for engaging a tongue in the cutter-holder and with inclined notches 5<1> for use in milling or sharpening the cutters, are clamped in a holder 5, reciprocable tangentially to the wheel blanks 11 in guides on a slide 6, which is reciprocated for the cut in a saddle 7 adjustable for feed on ways 1. A bar 33 on the side 6 slides through, and reciprocates, a bar carrying a rack 39, which rotates a pinion through one complete revolution during each stroke. The pinion has a flange carrying a pawl, which rotates a wheel 40 during the cutting - stroke. A spring pin engages a notch in the pawl-disk to ensure an exact rotation. The wheel 40 drives the blankrotating train 45. A disengaging-mechanism 51 for the pawl, and a hand indexing-device 55, are provided. The holder 5 is reciprocated to give the rolling motion by screws bevel-geared to a shaft 93 connected through change-gearing 85 to a pinion meshing with a rack 80, which is carried by the saddle 7.
