Abstract

Feeding and winding webs.- In a machine for coating webs of paper or other fabric, the spindle of the supply roll 16 is retarded by a band brake 25 controlled by a hand-operated screw 27. To keep the whole width of the web taut when one of its margins is thicker than the other, the web is passed over or under an idle roll. 31 which can be tilted to render the run of one margin of the web longer than the other. For this purpose one bearing of the roll is universally adjustable, and the other bearing 54, Fig. 1, can be adjusted vertically and horizontally by means of screws 43, 48. The spindle of the take-up roll 126 is driven by a belt 147 from the shaft of either of two intergeared drums 122, 121 according to the direction of rotation required, and the belt tension is adjusted by a worm-operated swinging idle roll 149 to provide the necessary slipping of the belt as the diameter of the web roll increases. To facilitate changing the rolls 16, 126, they may be mounted at either end of a rctatable frame 161, Fig. 8, adapted to be turned in either direction by power-operated worm gearing 168 controlled by reversing-gear 174.
