Abstract

165,806. Vickers, Ltd., and Field, A. B. June 19, 1918. Transformers.-Electrical apparatus is cooled mainly by the evaporation of a medium which is circulated through passages therein, and only to an incidental extent by raising the temperature of the medium, either in the liquid or vapour state. Carbon tetra-chloride is mentioned as a medium which vaporizes at a suitably low temperature to prevent damage to the insulation. In the apparatus shown diagrammatically in the Figure, a pump C draws the medium from a sump and delivers it to the electric machine A. The vaporized medium is drawn from the machine into a condenser D and returned as a liquid to the sump by a pipe E. Pipes d, d<1> conduct the cooling-medium of the condenser. Excess liquid may pass directly from the machine to the sump by a pipe F. When liquids are used which have too high a boiling point at atmospheric pressure, a partial vacuum may be maintained in the machine by a pump G which has an air discharge pipe g and a connection g<1> to the sump. Means for passing the medium through channels and between the laminations of magnetic cores are described only with reference to dynamo-electric machines.
