Abstract

165,645. Walker, W. L. June 8, 1920. Detecting and locating subaqueous sounds. -Apparatus for detecting subaqueous sounds comprises two electrodes of dissimilar metals such as zinc and copper, or steel and Monel metal, immersed in a liquid, for example sea-water, so that a difference of potential due to galvanic action occurs, the electrodes being arranged so that the distance between them is varied by the sound waves. One electrode 13 projects through a stuffing-box 12 in the wall of a sound-box 1, the other electrode 8 being secured to a movement - magnifying lever 6 pivoted to a bracket 7, the other end of the lever being attached to a diaphragm 2 on which the sound-waves impinge, and forming a closure to the box 1. Leads from the electrode pass upwards through a plug 26 and tube 19 to the input terminals of a three-electrcde amplifier 27, the plate circuit of which includes an indicator such as an oscilligraph, a telephone receiver 38, or ammeter 37. The apparatus is used with the sound-box 1 and electrodes submerged, and to equalize the pressure on opposite sides of the diaphragm a downwardly directed tube 24 is provided with its lower end open to the water. By means of a switch 43 the apparatus can be used either with or without a battery 41 included in circuit with the detector. The apparatus is directional, giving maximum response with the diaphragm 2 normal to the direction of sound propagation.
