Abstract
16,008. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, [Submarine Signal Co.]. Nov. 12. Audible signals.-A device for detecting earth vibrations such as sound waves comprises a reed E tuned by an adjustable weight e and having a light spring F carrying a contact f adapted to make and break contact with a fixed contact g, or vary the resistance at the contacts, the variations being detected by a telephone h<Î>. The reed E is mounted by means of screws d on the wedge-shaped or curved end of a post C so that the pressure between the contacts f, g may be adjusted. The apparatus is mounted on a vibration-transmitting support A which may rest upon or be driven into the ground, or may be immersed in water in a vessel let into the ground. For vibrations outside the limits of audibility, the receiver may have known means for rendering the vibrations audible, or for giving mechanical or visual signals. The reed E may be horizontal or vertical, and two or more may be used in series, in which case the reeds may be differently tuned. According to the Provisional Specification, the vibrations may generate an electric current, or the detecting apparatus may be entirely mechanical, and the device may be used as a sending instrument for originating vibrations,
