With metal soles and flexible metal uppers; slippers. - Boots, shoes, and slippers are made with tempered steel or other flexible metal soles which may be corrugated transversely as at 10, Fig. 15, while the upper comprises a metal toe cap 2, Fig. 1, and heel and side pieces 4, 3 separated by a leather, cloth, rubber, or like vamp portion 5. To give longitudinal rigidity the soles are fluted along their length at the waist. Fig. 10 shows a sheet-metal blank with side, heel, and toe portions all in one piece ready to be turned up and the edges joined together. These upper portions may, however, be made separately sometimes of aluminium and afterwards secured to an upstanding metal flange to which they are brazed, soldered, or riveted, or the upper parts may be flanged and fixed to an unflanged sole. A hollow heel may be formed in one with the sole for attachment of a wood or like filling 9, Fig. 12. Alternatively, a metal heel may be formed separately and attached afterwards by flanges or otherwise, or a wooden or leather heel may be bolted on the sole. The shoe is lined with soft material. Upper leathers to form a boot may be secured by sewing, lacing, &c. The metal may be enamelled or nickled. The soles may be provided with outside wearing pads secured by screws or a dovetail joint.
