Abstract
164,820. Marples, W. Dec. 3, 1920. Heating by electricity.-In an immersion heater, Fig. 3, the heating- element is enclosed between concentric metal tubes 3, 4 connected together at the bottom by a washer 5 secured by brazing or otherwise. The inner tube 3, which is substantially shorter than the outer one one, has a fixed cover 8 having a tubular screw-cut extension 9 over which fits a detachable cover 10 for the outer tube. The cover 10 is secured by a bolt 11. The space between the covers 8, 10 is preferably filled with fire-clay cement. A hollow handle 12 enclosing the leads and providing an air outlet passes through the cover 10. The heater may contain two or more beating elements which may be connected in series or parallel by switches. The heating-element may consist of a wire 2, Fig. 2, wound in notches at the edges of a mica sheet 1 and passed through holes in the middle; it may be enclosed between sheets of mica. Mica may be used in conbination with asbestos. Alternatively, the heating-element may be insulated by an airgap or a vacuum.
