Abstract

164,580. Wheeler, T. E. C. April 20, 1920. Milling, - An indexing-head for a milling or like machine for cutting gear-wheels &c. is so constituted that in addition to the ordinary dividing plate, micrometer dividing- means are provided so that blanks for wheels of any number of teeth can be readily indexed. The head has a graduated base 5 and can be rotated about a pin 2 projecting from a base-plate to which it can be clamped in the adjusted position. The centre 17 is secured in position by a screw-bolt 18, and is prevented from rotating in the sleeve 8 by a setscrew 21. The sleeve 8 is held in a boss 7 which is rotatable about a horizontal axis, being made integral with a disc 33 bolted to the graduated bracket I. The sleeve 8 carries a worm wheel 10 in gear with a worm the spindle of which is mounted in an eccentric bearing block 28 for adjustment purposes. End wear of the worm gear is taken up by a fine-threaded block 26. The wormgear is actuated for ordinary indexing purposes by a handle 24 having a spring-pressed pin 47 moving over a perforated index-plate 36, which is secured to worm wheel 37. This wheel is in gear with a screw 50 rotatable by a graduated head 52 for indexing purposes which the division plate 36 cannot effect. When not in use the wheel 37 is locked by a T-headed bolt 58 engaging a lug on a bracket 55 which carries the screw 50.
