Abstract

164,486. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). March 8, 1920. Blast and aspirating apparatus, ejector; regulating action.-Relates to multiple-stage steam-operated ejectors functioning as the air-pumps of condensers and consists in arranging a number of ejectors in parallel in the first stage, all delivering to the suction inlet of the second stage, with means for using some or all of the first stage ejectors according to the existing conditions for efficiency, together with a construction of the ejectors of each stage adapted to prevent heating of the induced fluid and to facilitate adjustment. Working steam is supplied to two first-stage ejectors 6, 7, Fig. 1, and the second-stage ejector 5 by means of pipes 23, 24, and 22 respectively, each having a stopvalve. The suction inlet 8 of the second-stage ejector is connected both to the deliveries of the first-stage ejectors by a pipe 13, and also to the condenser 19 to be exhausted; the first-stage ejectors also have their suction-inlets connected to the condenser, and stop-valves are provided. For heavy loads all three ejectors are supplied with steam, and the second stage-ejector draws only from the delivery of the first stage; for intermediate loads one of the first-stage ejectors is put out of action, and for still lighter loads the secondstage ejector only is emploved, drawing direct from the condenser. To minimize heating of the induced fluid, the steam or other inducing-fluid passes into a long chest 40, Fig. 2, projecting into the induced-fluid chamber 42 and formed with two concentric metal walls between which is heat insulation 47, the outer wall 46 being only connected to the wall of the steam chest at one end 49, and having heat-radiating fins 48. Ad. justment is by screwing the steam-chest with the parallel nozzles 41 into or out of the outer wall 46, which is in one with the body of the ejector.
