Description

May 14, 1929. HERRMANN 1,712,992
TURBINE LOCOMOTIVE Filed Dec. 4, 1925 Patented May 14, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT orr csy HEINRICH HERRMANN, OF ESSEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO FRIED. KRUPP .AKTIEN- GESELLSGHAFT, OF ESSEN-ON-THE -RUHR, GERMANY.

Application filed December 4, 1925, Serial No. 73,244, and in Germany December 31, 1924.
This invention relates to turbine locomo-,
tives which are driven by higlbpressure steam. If such turbines are to possess a good thermodynamic efliciency, they must be made multistage. Besides, even in case of -high outputs and consequent large steam quantities, the cross-sections of the distributors in the high-pressure stages of the highpressure turbines become extraordinarily small becauseof the very small specific volume of the high-pressure steam, so that already in these cases difficulties are encountered in the manufacture ofthe distributors. In view of the. considerable saving of steam and fuel, the expensive multistage construction is used for the main driving turbines of turbine locomotives driven by high pressure steam in spite of the diificulty of manufacturing the distributors for the high pressure stages. But, circumstances are difierent with regard to the auxiliary turbines used for operating the several pumps for Water of condensation, the furnace blower and the re-cooling plant. These are small engines the output of each of which amounts from about 1/25 to 1/15 at most of the output of the main turbines. In addition to the particularly sensible general difficulties in the manufacture of such small units as high-pressure turbines, such as the diflicult manufacture of the distributors and the great length of structure owing to the multista-geness, there is still entailed the cssential drawback of the long high-pressure pipes, which must eventually be provided even with flexible pipe-joints and of the constantly operative control valves which are diflicult to keep tight.
According to the invention, these difficulties are overcome in a simple manner by driving only the maiu'turbines with highpressure steam, while the auxiliary turbines are driven by steam of a lower pressure.
The accompanying drawing is a diagrammat-ic view of an embodiment of the subject matter of the invention.
The power plant comprises a high-pressure boiler A from which a steam ipe a extends to the engine serving to drive the locomotive and consisting of ahigh-pressure turbine B and a low-pressure turbine B connected with the former by a pipe 6. The exhaust-steam side of the turbine B is connected by a pipe b with a condenser G. Another boiler Ddesigned to generate steam of a pressure lower than that in the highpressure boiler A, is connected by a steam pipe al with the inlet opening of each of two turbines E and F designed to drive auxiliary engines such as, for instance, a pump for water of condensation and a furnace blower. The exhaust steam of the auxiliary turbines E and F is fed through pipes k and m to two heaters K and M through which passes a pipe 0 leading from the condenser C to the boiler A and designed to heat the water of condensation returning to the boiler A. The water of condensation formed in the heaters K and M is forced by a feed pump N through a pipe 11, directly into the low pressure boiler D, so that there is produced for the low pressure boiler an entirely separate circulation from the boiler D through the auxiliary turbines E, F, the heaters K, M and the feedlpump N back to the boiler D. The low pressure boiler D has disposed in it as a heating element a coiled tubeP to which steam from the highpressure boiler A is supplied through a pipe 32 The exhaust steam end of the coiled tube P is connected by a pipe 12 with the 1 plant.
