Abstract

164,370. Creed & Co., Ltd., and Creed, F. G. Aug. 6, 1919 . Strip-controlled type-wheel machines.-Printing apparatus for use in connection with selecting- mechanism for printing telegraph messages in ordinary characters at high speed from perforated tape or direct signal impulses, comprises a lightly constructed type-wheel driven by friction from a continuously rotating driving-head, at such a speed relatively to the main shaft that, after the type-wheel has been arrested by the selector mechanism, further re-setting and selection can occur before printing again takes place. The type-wheel, described in detail below, is frictionally clutched to a driving-head d, Fig 1, through a spring plate e and a boss on a radial arm b, the arm b being provided with a lateral blade g arranged to rotate around the driving- head, and the type-wheel being arrested by a selector bar descending into the path of the lateral blade, in which position slip of the driving- mechanism occurs. The driving-head is journaled in a stationary cylinder u on the secondary shaft v, the secondary shaft being driven through toothed gear at a speed 30-35 per cent greater than the speed of the main shaft, which makes one revolution for each cycle of operations performed. A series of differentially-notched combs 4 are spaced and mounted upon the stationary cylinder, between a notched end plate 6 and a flange u<2>, each comb having a small rotary movement for selection against the action of a spring. L-shaped selector-bars 10, 10<a>, are arranged around the stationary cylinder and fulcrum upon an annular rib 7<a> formed upon a plate 7 situated adjacent to the end plate 6. For this purpose, the selector-bars are notched at 10<b>, and in their normal position are pressed on an unnotched portion of the combs by springs 10<d>. The arrangement shown for setting the combs according to the signals receiver comprises depending arms 19 on the combs actuated by a series of parallel bars 20, which may be reciprocated under the control of punched tape as described in Specifications 22653/02 and 25861/05, or as described in Specifications 8999/07 and 1947/08, wherein valve plates are set by strip control. The means for setting the combs may comprise electromagnetic devices for reciprocating the bars attached to the depending arms under direct signal impulses. A sleeve 13 on an extension u<4> of the stationary cylinders is resiliently actuated by a cam 18 on the main shaft to raise the operative selector bars 10, 10<a> out of the aligned notches, and the remainder of the selector-bars off the combs, in order that the combs may snap back to their original setting. Type-wheels.-The type-wheel comprises a hollow hub a, Figs. 1 and 7, with inner and outer flanges a<1>, a<2>, the inner flange a carrying the radial arm b, and the outer flange a having near its periphery an annular series of radial grooves h in which are seated the outer ends of light levers k carrying the types m on the outer side, the inner ends of the levers being seated on an annular fulcrum rib i and alternately positioned in and between an annular series of notches a<4> in the hub a, a spring-pressed recessed disc o keeping the whole series of type-levers in place. Hammer-impression arrangements.-When the type-wheel has been arrested, the selected type-lever is moved laterally for impression by a striker 21, Fig. 1, resiliently carried by an arm 22 which is rocked from the main shaft through cam, roller, and link mechanism. For spacing, the type-wheel may be provided with an opening which allows the striker to make an idle forward movement when the spacing selector bar is operative. Roller inking-arrangements.-An inking-roller 39 is carried upon a. spring blade 40.
