Abstract
162904. Thompson, W. P., (Fours et ProcÚdÚs Mathy, Soc. Anon.). April 15, 1920. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-A gas burner for boilers having tubular furnaces consists of a tube containing porous and refractory granules into which an air admission pipe and a gas pipe project parallel to each other and parallel with the axis of the tube, these pipes being provided at the inlet end with inclined apertures allowing the gas and air to escape and mix in the mass of granules where they are burnt flamelessly, the rest of the length of the tubes being unperforated. The gas and air are admitted through the pipes 31 and 32 respectively, Fig. 1, and then pass into the longitudinal refractory blocks 1 and 2 shown in section in Fig. 2 provided with apeitures 24 and 25 inclined so that the air and gas will mix intimately and burn in a mass of granules 33. Adjacent to the blocks 1 and 2 in a longitudinal direction at the gas inlet end are arranged re fractory blocks 13 - - 18 shown in section in Fig. 1, the blocks 15 and 16 being provided with holes 20 and 19 to form a continuation of the air and gas inlet pipes respectively, while at the outlet end is a block 9 of refractory material, the whole structure being kept in position in the tubes 23 by means of two metal plates 12 and 26 being provided with a central stay 7. The apertures 21 and 22 in the blocks 13 and 14 permit the insertion of the granules and the lighting of the gaseous mixture and are normally closed by plugs held in place by doors pivoted on the metal plate 12. The gases after combustion pass through perforations arranged on the circumference of the slab 9 into the space between the wall 23 and a refractory cylinder 34 provided with longitudinal external ribs 35 resting on the inner walls of the tube 23.
