Planing. - The rotary cutter e of a machine for planing floors, ships' decks, &c. is mounted at one side of the travelling carriage a and is driven by a compressed air, electric, or other motor c, which also drives the carriage wheels s through worm gearing x and a clutch. The cutter bearing is adjusted vertically by means of a screw o and a hand-wheel r. A brake may be fitted to a drum k. Fig. 6 shows a cutter blade in section; the cutters may be narrow and staggered as shown in Fig. 7. In a modified device moved by hand, shown in Fig. 3, a pivoted sole plate 5, with or without rollers, is adjusted by means of a set screw 6 to determine the position of the cutter. The cutter may be driven by a separate motor and flexible shafting.
