My invention relates to mortising machines. An object is to provide a machine which is adapted for cutting mortises in articles of wood. While intended more particularly for cutting mortises in doors for the purpose of receiving locks, it is to be understood that the machine may be used for cutting mortises for-other purposes.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and the novel features of my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention,--
Fig. 1 isa View of the machine mostly in central vertical section. Fig. 2 is an end elevational view. Fig. 3 is a view in verticalsectionon the line 3-3of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is atop plan view.- Fig. 5 is a view in horizontal section on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 isa-perspective view of an edge portion of a door showing a'mortise out thereinby. the machine. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of'the motor detached from the remainder of the machine.
As shown in the drawings, the machine includes a base member 10 from the rear end of which a handle 12 extends upwardly. As will be understood from Fig. 1, the middle portion of this base member contains openings for receiving bearings which will be referred to later. A ring 14 is secured upon the base member by screw bolts 16 which also pass through a circumferential flange formed on a casting 18 whereby the latter is secured in place on the ring. Carried by the casting 18 is a disklike member 20 whose central portion is depressed and fits into an opening in the casting 18 so as to be supported thereby. The member 20 is provided with an upwardly extending circumferential flange within which fits the lower end of a casing 22 which contains an electric motor. The casing 22 is provided with a lug 24: containing a screwthreaded opening for receiving a screw bolt 26 which passes through an open-sided eye formed in a lug 28 extending up from the casting 18. The opposite side of the motor casing 22 carries a switch box 30 containing a switch adapted to be operated by a projecting handle 32 as will be understood from Fig. 7. The box 30 is provided with a screwthreaded opening'for receiving a screw bolt 34 which passes through an. open-sided eye formed in :1 lug 36 extending up frornthe handle 12. The opensides of theeycs carried by the lugs 28 and 36 extend in opposite directions so that the motor may. be attached by givingit a slight turn and. screwing down the bolts 26 and 34. This construction also makes the motor readily detachable. In furtherance of this result, the end of themotorshaft 38 is:provided with a tongueAO which is adapted to fit into a groove formed in the=upper end of a driving shaft 42 which ismounted ina ballbearing device 44. The motor. shaft 38 is mounted in a ball bearing-device 46 while a ball bearing device 48 is. so positioned asto constitute a bearing for the two-em gaged ends of these shafts. Theshaft 42 carries a spur gear 50 whichmeshes with a-spur gear 52 carried by a shaft 54 mounted in ball bearing device/s56 and 58; Thespur gear 52 meshes with a spur gear GOcarried by a sleeve 62 mounted in ball bearing'devices-(Stand 66. A shafti68 has a splined engagement in the sleeve 62- so as: to be slidable therein while held for rotation therewith. The lower end of the shaft 68 is provided with a cutter 70 while the upper end of this shaft has ball-bearing engagement in a socket formed in the lower end of a handle member 72. This member has a lateral projection 74 containing an opening in which a rod 7 6 fits. This rod is threaded at its lower end into a socket 7 8 fonned in the casting 18. The projection 74 carries a spring pressed detent provided with a knob 82 for retracting the same from engagement with a series of depressions 84 with which the rod 76 is provided. The base member 10 has downward extensions 86 and 88, the ends of which have perforations through which parallel rolls 90 and 92 extend so that the portion of the device previously described may be reciprocated on the rods by an operator who grasps the handle 12. The ends of the rods are secured in heads 94 and 96 having lugs which support transverse rods 98 and 100. Pairs of clamps 102 and 104 have perforations near their upper ends through which the rods 98 and extend respectively. Rods 106 and 108 having right and left screw threaded portions as shown in Fig. 2 extend through screwthreaded openings in the clamps.

These rods have handles 110and 112 on their ends upon turning of which in the proper direction the clamps may be brought into clamping engagement with the opposite sides of an articlesuch as a door '1) which is to be provided with a mortise. When the device is thus clamped, the motor is started with the cutter in raised position and the portion of the device carried upon the rods 90 and 92 is reciprocated upon them as a guide between the desired limits by the op- As the cutter is reciprocated, the shaft 68 is gradualiy moved downwardly until the mortise M is cut to the desired depth. In order to enlarge the outer margin of the-mortise in order to provide for receiving the outer edge plate of a door lock, the following construction-is provided. A rod 11 i is rotatably mounted in the base member 10, the lower portion of this red being threaded to engage in a threaded opening in a member 116 having a fork 118 which engages a circumferential groove formed in a ringlike member 120 splined on the shaft 68. The lower side of the member 120 is provided with a cutter which cuts the enlargement E when the rod 11a is turned to move the member 120 downwardly. The lower end of the shaft 42 carries a blower 122 which delivers a blast of air through a tube 124: which is so positioned as to blow the cuttings out of the mortise as it is being formed.
I claim: 7
1. A mortising machine comprising clamping means, a guiding device carried by said clamping means, a support mounted for rteiprocation on said guiding device, a motor carried by said support, a rotatable shaft carried by said support, a cutter on one end of said shaft, driving connections between said motor and rotatable shaft, a red rotatably held in said support, said rod having a screwthreaded portion, a forked member enga ed by said screwthreaded portion, a ringlike member splined on said rotatable shaft and having a circumferential groove which receives the forked portion of said forked member, and an edge cutting .tool carried by said ringlike member, said tool being adapted to enlarge the outer margin of the mortise.
2. A mortising machine comprising clamping means, a guiding device carried by said clamping means, a support mounted slidably on said guiding device, a handle attached to said support for reciprocating the same, an encased motor adapted to be carried by said support, an opensided eye carried by said support, an opensided eye carried by said handle, the open sides of said eyes extending in opposite direct-ions, screwbolts engaging opposite sides of the casing of said motor, said bolts being adapted to pass through said eyes and to be screwed down thereon, a driving shaft detachably engaged with the shaft of said motor, a rotary cutting tool carried by said support, and driving connections between said driving shaft and cutting tool.
