Application filed October and has for its principal object to provide a machine of this nature which is provided with a boring tool that may be readily placed in and out of engagement withthe ground when so desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a boring machine which may be easily attached to a vehicle so as tobe operated therefrom.
Another important objectof the invention is to generally improve upon boring machines by providing a mechanism which will be of extremely simple, durable and inexpensive construction, one which is efficient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the floor of a vehicle body provided with the usual side members 2. At the rear end of these side members 2 I provide on each a pair of spaced beams 3 so as to form a slideway for the end supporting blocks 1} and 5. This block 7 may be temporarily held by any suitable means. In the present instance a pin 7 rises from the floor of the vehicle and is re ceived in an opening provided in. the block 7. A drive shaft 8 is journalled in the blocks 5 and '7 and'has rotatably mounted thereon Q a pulley wheel 9over which is trained the drive belt 10 which may be actuated by any suitable mechanism such as an internal combustion engine also carried by the vehicle. A clutch segment 11 is fixed to the pulley 9 and rotates therewith. A clutch sleeve 12 is suitably keyed to the drive shaft 8 and is slidable thereon for engagement with the clutch segment 11 so that rotary motion may be imparted to the shaft 8. An arm 13 is suitably associated with the clutch sleeve 12 so as to slide the same on the shaft 8 and this arm 13 is operated by a lever 141 suitably pivoted 0n the block 7 and provided with a dog 15 engageable with the rack 16 carried by the block 7. A rod 17 connects the dog 15 for placing it in and out of engagement with the rack 16 and is operated by the lever 18 pivoted adjacent the upper end of the lever 14.
A pinion 19 is fixed upon the drive shaft 8 and in mesh with a gear wheel 20 keyed to the driven shaft 21 which is also journalled in the blocks 5 and 7 so as to extend parallel with the drive shaft 8. This shaft 21, however, extends through the block 7 and is j ournalled in a rectangular frame 22 having a beveled pinion 23 keyed to its end so as to be situated within the frame 22. This frame 22 is provided at its other end with a projection 24 which is journalled in the block 6 and thus it will be seen that the frame 22 is journalled between the blocks 6 and 7 A sleeve 25 is journalled transversely in the frame 22 and is fixed to a beveled gear 26 which is in mesh with and driven by the pinion 23. The flooring 1 of the vehicle is cut away at 27 below the center portion of the frame 22 and a drill shank 28 preferably square in cross section is slidably mounted through the sleeve 25 and is provided at its lower end with a boring tool 29 which preferably is provided with the spiral cutting blades 30. At the upper end of the shank 28 there is swivelly mounted a wheel 31 so that the operator may place pressure thereon and also readily place the boring tool 29 into and out of engagement with the ground.
In operation the operator of the machine stands within the vehicle and manipulates the clutch elements 11 and '32 through the lever 14 as may be desired. The frame 22 being pivotally mounted between the blocks 6 and 7 it will be seen that the boring tool may be operated almost at will since it may be moved longitudinally through the sleeve or to take positions such as is indicated by the dotted line Thus it will be seen that after the hole is bored the tool may be lifted therefrom and the dirt will readily disengage therefrom when the same is placed in the position 33. It will also be noted that the whole mechanism may be removed from the vehicle by sliding the blocks 4 and 5 from engagement with the beams 3 and the parts situated therebe-tween will be lifted therewith.
Having thus described my invention what 1 claim as new is:
1. In combination, a frame including a base and side members, a pair of spaced beams situated on each side member, a plurality of end supporting blocks having projections slidable within the space between the beams, an intermediate supporting block, a second frame journaled between one of the end blocks and the intermediate block, a sleeve journaled in the second frame, means for rotating the sleeve, a shank slidable through the sleeve, and rotatable therewith, and a boring tool carried by the shank.
2. In combination, a shank, a boring tool carried by the shank, a rockably mounted sleeve, means for rotating the sleeve, said shank slidable through and rotatable with said sleeve, a frame, said means being slidably mounted in said frame vertically thereof.
