Abstract

161,787. Fenby, E. B. Feb. 25, 1920. Folding edges of sheet material.-A folder for use in machines for making four-fold linen collars &c. consists of thin metal strips arranged side by side so that by relative sliding movements their operative ends can be caused to assume any desired configuration. Groups of thin metal strips a - - d, Fig. 4, forming the folders are adjustably clamped in slidable holders. Solid folders e are provided for forming the double corner folds or lock corners. The folders are normally held in their outer positions by springs and are moved inwardly by compressed air cylinders, the folders e having weaker springs so that they are the first to be moved by their cylinders. The groups d of strips forming the corner folders are interspaced by shorter strips, so that as these folders move inwardly, they remain in contact with the adjacent folders. In use, strips 3, Fig. 6, of material to be folded are laid in recesses formed in the inner ends of the folders and are pressed against a spring-supported electrically-heated table 2 by a hinged plate w. The folders then move inwardly and turn the edges of the material over the plate. Compressed air is then admitted to a diaphragm 7, which expands and presses the folded material between the folders and the heated table. Upon release of the pressure in the cylinders and the diaphragm, the folders move outwardly under the influence of their springs, and the plate w can be raised for the removal of the folded article. The control of the compressed air to the cylinders and the diaphragm is effected by a valve-device which is put into operation when the plate is lowered by a projection on an arm carrying the plate.
