161,394. Cook, T. Feb. 18, 1920. Balancing -apparatus. - Relates to retarding- apparatus for fire-escapes and other lowering- apparatus. The rope drum I and a train of gears by which it drives the pinion H are mounted on a table D which is connected by rods M and a disc N to a piston rod. The pinion H meshes with a rack B on the cylinder A in which works the piston Q of the rod O. A pressure valve P retards the passage of oil from the lower side of the piston to the upper as the table is raised during the descent of a load attached to the rope. When the load is detached, the piston &c. descends and the rope is rewound on the drum.
