Abstract

Web feeding and guiding arrangements. - Relates to web-manifolding arrangements, of the kind described in Specifications 23349/14 and 121,926, in which carbon sheets interleaved with the webs are connected to a trolly 92 running on rails 192 on the paper-carriage 24, the carbon sheets being fed forwards during writing and being retracted by means of the trolly during the platen roller 20 has been raised and the webs have been drawn up to a gauge 50. According to the invention, the trolly is provided with a web-clamp, consisting of a rigid blade and a stationary flexible jaw, for preventing the webs from creeping relatively; further, the clamping-device can be employed for forming loose bights in the webs, the line-spacing mechanism being thereby relieved from unwinding the webs. As shown in Figs. 1, 7, and 11, the clamp consists of a thin movable blade 61 and a flexible stationary jaw 62 having a bend for receiving the blade. The clamp extends across the trolly, and the jaw is secured to the detachable upper plate 90 of the trolly by means of the blocks 46 carrying the carbon-sheet fingers 30. The blade is secured to pivoted arms 70, 72 which are connected by a shaft 76 and are drawn downwards by springs 71, 73. The arms can be raised to release the blade by drawing forwards a finger-piece 64 formed on a link 66 connected to a bell-crank 67 which is provided with a pin 68 engaging the arm 70. The finger-piece 64 is adjacent to the finger-piece 65 for moving the trolly, the support 94 for the finger-piece 65 carrying a pin engaging a slot in the link 66; the link may be formed with a bend 93 engaging the support. The returning-spring 78 for the link 66 holds the jaw 61 in the closed position by causing the pin 68 to engage a cam surface 79 on the arm 70. There may also be provided hooks 85, Fig. 11, for engaging pins 84 on the arms 70, 72 when the jaw is closed, the hooks being secured to a shaft 86 and one of the hooks having an extension connected by a link to the bell-crank 67. To prevent interference with the webs, the shaft 76 is cranked and the shaft 86 is mounted beneath the plate 90. Before typing is begun, the trolly is moved to the rear, the webs are clamped, and the trolly is drawn forward to form, adjacent to the platen, bights in the webs; the trolly is then again moved to the rear to transfer the bights to the neighbourhood of the web-rollers 32. Typing is then begun, the clamp preventing creeping of the webs, and the line-spacing mechanism drawing-up the bights in webs.
