Abstract
160,865. Forgie, J. Oct. 6, 1919. Diving-chambers. - Relates to apparatus for exploring the strata forming the bed of the sea and for like explorations. A chamber 21, Figs. 2 and 4, is anchored to the bed 22 by projections 31 and a hole is bored by a drill &c. 39, the contents of the boring as they pass up through the tube 30 being examined by the workmen in the chamber. Water may be circulated through the tube 30 during drilling by a pump 44. Communication with the surface of the sea is made by an airpipe 23 and electric cables &c., and foul air may be expelled by a pump 48. Relief workmen and supplies may be placed in a vessel 120, Fig. 14, and drawn down by a cable 130 and winding- engine 131, the cable being previously sent up from the chamber 21 by a buoy. The vessel 120 has a spherical chamber 123 universally jointed at 124. Water is drained from the compartment by the pipe 136, air can enter by the pipe 137 and water can enter by the pipes 140 when it is desired to disconnect the vessel 120. In a modfication, the chamber 123 is replaced by a cylindrical chamber with a conical door beneath. Fig. 4 shows the drill rod 39 within the tube 30 clamped to the support 32 provided with a valve. Slide valves 33 are arranged to prevent the entry of water when adding a length of tube or cutting off part of the tube.
