Creel arrangements. -Yarn or other flexible material being drawn off f r o m bobbins, spools, drums, reels, cheeses, or coils is tensioned by electromagnetic means. The bobbin &c. e, or the base upon which the cheese or coil is mounted, is provided with a plate f of paramagnetic material insulated from the spindle a. A coil c surrounds the spindle a, and when energized magnetizes the flange b. A tube provides a bearing for the bobbin &c. A magnetic clutch plate may be arranged also at the opposite end of the bobbin, the plate carrying a non-magnetic socket arranged to slide on but not rotate on the spindle a. If the bobbins are arranged on a rotary spider as in a braiding machine, the current for the coils c may be picked up from a contact ring by suitable, brushes.
