Abstract

159,979. Laurie, A. P., Sutcliffe, E. R., and Sutcliffe, Speakman, & Co., Ltd. Dec. 9, 1919. Making and finishing blocks, slabs, &c.-Blocks, slabs, &c. are made by mixing a dry binding agent such as plaster of paris, Portland cement, or magnesia cement with a moistened absorbent vegetable substance and moulding the mass under pressure to express the liquid from the absorbent substance into the binding agent. In an example, to 1 lb. of sawdust is added an equal quantity of water, producing a damp granular mass. 3 lb. plaster of paris is mixed with this, and the dry mass is moulded under a pressure of about half a ton to the square inch to squeeze the water into the plaster. The slabs &c. are removed from the moulds and dried for about three weeks preferably in piles under weights to prevent warping. When oxychloride cement is employed, the sawdust &c. is moistened with a solution of magnesium chloride, and magnesia is added. The slabs may be reinforced with expanded metal &c. placed in the mould with the granular material.
