(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO ELECTRIC KETTLE INSTALLATIONS (71) We, ALLIED INTERNATIONAL DE SIGNERS LIMITED, a British Company, of 10 Rathbone Place, London W1P 2DN, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to electric kettle installations and is more particularly but not exclusively concerned with providing an electric kettle installation for mounting on a wall or other vertical supporting surface.

According to this invention there is provided an electric kettle installation comprising an electric kettle and a supporting bracket adapted for attachment to a fixed surface and providing a foot for supporting the kettle, the kettle being formed with an external vertical slot the upper end portion of which is of undercut form and accommodates an electrical plug, and the bracket carrying a block providing an upwardly facing electrical socket to receive the plug, said slot providing a guideway engageable by the block to guide the plug into engagement with the socket by a downward translational movement of the kettle on to said foot of the bracket.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and will now be described by way of example. In the drawings: Figure 1 is an exploded view of an installation according to the invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of the bracket of the installation, Figure 3 is an elevation of the bracket, and Figure 4 is a sectional view of the kettle.

Referring chiefly to the Figures 1 and 2 drawings, the bracket comprises a support bar 10 which is provided with holes 11 to receive screws for attaching the bar, in an inclined attitude as shown in Figure 3, to a wall or other vertical supporting surface. A foot 12 projects at the lower end of the bar 10 for the body of the kettle to rest on, and an arm 13 projects from the other upper end of the bar 10 and carries a block 14 having an upwardlyfacing electrical socket 14a for a three-pin plug. The socket is connected to the mains electricity supply circuit and has an on/off switch 15.

The kettle comprises a container portion 16 having in its top wall 17 an aperture in which is mounted the support portion 18 of an electric heating element 19. The support portion is sealed in the aperture by a washer 20. Three L-shaped plug pins 21 electrically connected respectively to tiie two vertical end portions 22 of the element 19 and the support portion 18 each have an anchoring arm 21a disposed in a channel in an insulating part 23 of the portion 18 and project vertically downward through the part 23 and into a rearwardly facing slot 24 in the rear wall of the kettle.

The handle moulding 25 of the kettle moulding includes a platform having on its underside a hollow to enclose the insulating part 23 and has a hollow downwardly extending part 26 which covers and thus imparts an undercut form to the upper end portion of the slot. The pins 21 are accommodated in this portion of the slot. The handle is held in place by a nut 27 provided with a screw-driver slot and screwed on to a stud 28 which is welded to the top wall 17 of the container portion 16. The sides of the downwardly extending part 26 are disposed against the sides of the slot in the container portion 16, and a locating pin 29 on the handle registers in a hole in the insulating part 23, to provide additional location for the handle on the container portion.

The kettle is mounted on the bracket by engaging the block 13a in the slot 24 and then lowering the kettle vertically to engage the prongs 21 in the socket. The foot of the bracket engages the underside of the kettle forward of the centre of gravity of the kettle whilst the block 14 and arm 13 support and locate the rear end of the kettle.

According to this invention there is provided an electric kettle installation comprising an electric kettle and a supporting bracket adapted for attachment to a fixed surface and providing a foot for supporting the kettle, the kettle being formed with an external vertical slot the upper end portion of which is of undercut form and accommodates an electrical plug, and the bracket carrying a block providing an upwardly facing electrical socket to receive the plug, said slot providing a guideway engageable by the block to guide the plug into engagement with the socket by a downward translational movement of the kettle on to said foot of the bracket. An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and will now be described by way of example. In the drawings: Figure 1 is an exploded view of an installation according to the invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of the bracket of the installation, Figure 3 is an elevation of the bracket, and Figure 4 is a sectional view of the kettle. Referring chiefly to the Figures 1 and 2 drawings, the bracket comprises a support bar 10 which is provided with holes 11 to receive screws for attaching the bar, in an inclined attitude as shown in Figure 3, to a wall or other vertical supporting surface. A foot 12 projects at the lower end of the bar 10 for the body of the kettle to rest on, and an arm 13 projects from the other upper end of the bar 10 and carries a block 14 having an upwardlyfacing electrical socket 14a for a three-pin plug. The socket is connected to the mains electricity supply circuit and has an on/off switch 15. The kettle comprises a container portion 16 having in its top wall 17 an aperture in which is mounted the support portion 18 of an electric heating element 19. The support portion is sealed in the aperture by a washer 20. Three L-shaped plug pins 21 electrically connected respectively to tiie two vertical end portions 22 of the element 19 and the support portion 18 each have an anchoring arm 21a disposed in a channel in an insulating part 23 of the portion 18 and project vertically downward through the part 23 and into a rearwardly facing slot 24 in the rear wall of the kettle. The handle moulding 25 of the kettle moulding includes a platform having on its underside a hollow to enclose the insulating part 23 and has a hollow downwardly extending part 26 which covers and thus imparts an undercut form to the upper end portion of the slot. The pins 21 are accommodated in this portion of the slot. The handle is held in place by a nut 27 provided with a screw-driver slot and screwed on to a stud 28 which is welded to the top wall 17 of the container portion 16. The sides of the downwardly extending part 26 are disposed against the sides of the slot in the container portion 16, and a locating pin 29 on the handle registers in a hole in the insulating part 23, to provide additional location for the handle on the container portion. The kettle is mounted on the bracket by engaging the block 13a in the slot 24 and then lowering the kettle vertically to engage the prongs 21 in the socket. The foot of the bracket engages the underside of the kettle forward of the centre of gravity of the kettle whilst the block 14 and arm 13 support and locate the rear end of the kettle. WHAT WE CLAIM IS: -

1. An electric kettle installation compris ing an electric kettle and a supporting bracket adapted for attachment to a fixed surface and providing a foot for supporting the kettle, the kettle being formed with an external vertical slot the upper end portion of which is of undercut form and accommodates an electrical plug, and the bracket carrying a block providing an upwardly facing electrical socket to receive the plug, said slot providing a guideway engageable by the block to guide the plug into engagement with the socket by a downward translational movement of the kettle on to said foot of the bracket.

An installation as claimed in claim 1, wherein the kettle has secured to the top wall of its water containing portion a plastics moulding which provides a rigid lifting handle and a portion which covers the open side of the upper end of the slot, thereby to give the upper end of the slot its undercut form.

3. An installation as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wheren the bracket is in the form of a bar adapted to be secured, in an attitude inclined to the horizontal, against a vertical wall and when so secured to provide an arm and said foot at opposite ends thereof which arm and foot projects outward from the wall, said arm carrying said block.

4. An electric kettle installation substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
