Description

(54) SLIDING PANEL ASSEMBLIES (71) We, H.S.C. WIDNEY WINDOWS LIMITED, a British Company, of Salford Street, Aston, Birmingham B6 7SA, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to sliding panel assemblies for vehicles, more particularly sliding window assemblies, for example sliding window assemblies for motor vans.
In known sliding panel assemblies there may be a tendency for a sliding panel, when a part thereon is grasped with a view to sliding the panel along a frame of the assembly, to tilt up or down whereby sliding movement of the panel is hindered or prevented.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the above disadvantage is avoided.
According to the invention, a sliding panel assembly comprises a sliding panel mounted in a frame having a channel having its longitudinally-extending mouth open towards, to face in a direction transverse to, the plane of the panel, said channel having its longitudinal axis in the direction of sliding of the panel and having its opposed side faces situated in planes transverse to the plane of the panel, and there being provided, mounted on the panel, flanged means in the form of one or more members or devices having a flange or flanges slidingly engaged into the said channel to project between said opposed side faces of the channel whereby to prevent, or substantially to prevent, up or down tilting of the panel in its own plane.
The said flanged means may, in one embodiment, comprise an L-sectioned member, which may be of nylon. which has a flange slidingly engaged into said channel, and an upstanding attachment flange secured to the panel. Said L-sectioned member may have in its upstanding attachment flange a plurality of slots which receive bolts securing said L-sectioned member to the panel and which permit said L-sectioned member, when being installed, to be adjusted up or down relatively to said bolts before tightening of said bolts. The panel may carry a catch device operable to retain the panel against sliding from a predetermined adjusted position and the said attachment flange of the said L-section member may be clamped between the said catch device and the panel.
The flanged means may, in another embodiment, comprise a catch device which is operable to retain the panel against sliding from a predetermined adjusted position and which carries a flange slidingly engaged with the aforesaid channel.
The aforesaid channel may, in a case when a catch device operable to retain the panel in any one of a plurality of selected positions is carried by the panel, have a wall provided with adjustment holes for selectively receiving a nose of a catch lever of such catch device.
In the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example, a convenient embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a cross-section through a bottom portion of a sliding window assembly for a motor vehicle and shows, attached to a sliding window panel, a catch device, and a flanged member having a horizontal flange slidingly engaged into a channel in a frame of said assembly, said catch being shown in elevation; Figure 2 is a cross-section, through the assembly bottom portion shown in Figure 1, showing a further panel, and a further flanged member and catch device of identical construction to that shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the assembly bottom portion shown in Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 4 is another view of the assembly bottom portion shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings, a sliding window assembly for a motor vehicle, for example a motor van, comprises a pair of sliding panels 1, 1' mounted in a relativelyfixed metal frame 2 having a pair of inwardly-presented channels 3, 3', respectively receiving the edges of the panels 1, 1 (there being suitable lining material (not shown), for example felt, lining the inside of the said 1 channels 3, 3',) and having in addition a narrow channel 4 the longitudinally-extending mouth 5 of which is open towards, to face in a direction transverse to, the planes of the panels 1, 1', said channel 4 having its longitudinal axis in the direction of sliding of said panels 1, 1', and having its opposed side faces situated in planes transverse to the planes of said panels 1, 1'.
Mounted on each of the panels 1, 1' is a catch device 6 comprising a catch body 7 in which is pivoted a catch lever 8 having a nose 9 engageable at will, to retain the respective sliding panel, 1 or 1', in any selected one of various positions relatively to the frame 2, with a selected one of adjustment slots, such as 10, in the frame 2. Each catch lever 8 is, for example by a compression spring such as 21, spring-biassed in a direction urging its nose 9 downwardly; and each catch device 6 has, as shown, a pivoted locking lever 11 which, when the nose 9 of the catch device is engaged into a slot 10, can be turned manually whereby an abutment face 12 on the lever 11 abuts against the catch lever 8 to prevent movement of the latter to release the nose 9 from the slot. A catch device provided with a locking lever of the construction shown is described in our co-pending Application No. 19436/77, (Serial No 1594822) Attached between each catch device 6 and the respective panel, 1 or 1', is flanged means in the form of a one-piece flanged member 13 of plastics material (for example of nylon) which is carried by the respective panel, 1 or 1', and which is of an L-section and consists of (a) an upstanding vertical attachment flange 14 clamped between the respective catch device 6 and the respective panel, 1 or I I, and (b) a horizontal lateral flange 15 snugly engaged into the aforesaid channel 4, said flange 15 projecting between the aforesaid opposed side faces of the channel 4. The catch devices 6 and the respective L-sectioned members 13 are secured to the respective panels by clamping bolts 16, 17 which also serve as pivots for the respective catch levers 8 and locking levers 11. In the case of the arrangement on the panel 1', a spacer 20 is provided between the member 13 and the panel 1'.
The lateral flange 15 of each L-sectioned member 13 co-acts with the channel 4 to prevent, or substantially to prevent, the tilting of the respective panel, I or 1', in its own plane in an up or down direction when the respective catch device 6 is grasped with a view to sliding the respective panel, I or 1', along the frame, and, once the nose 9 is raised clear of the adjustment slots 10, the panel can be slid smoothly to another position.
The vertical flange 14 of each L-sectioned member 13 preferably has a pair of slots 18, 19, through which pass the respective bolts 16, 17. The elongate shape of these slots 18, 19 permit the respective L-sectioned member, when being installed, and before tightening of the bolts 16, 17, to be, if necessary, adjusted up or down relatively to said bolts 16, 17 to enable the lateral flange 15 to register with the channel 4.
If desired, the members 13 may, instead of being clamped between the respective panels and catch devices, be secured to the respective panels at locations different from the locations of the catch devices.
The flanged members 13 may be of any other suitable material, and if desired, instead of there being provided separate members 13, the bodies of the catch devices 6 may have integral lateral flanges engaging into the channel 4 to prevent or substantially prevent up or down tilting of the panels in their own planes, but the arrangement shown, with separate L-sectioned members, is preferred.
If desired the assembly may have a single sliding panel carrying a single flanged member or device having a flange slidingly engaged into the channel 4.
If desired, instead of the or each flanged member or device having a single lateral flange slidingly engaged into the channel 4, it may have two or more aligned co-planar flanges spaced endwise from each other and each slidingly engaged into the channel 4.
The catch device or catch devices may if desired be of a suitable construction other than that shown, or may be omitted.
The invention may also be applied in suitable cases to a sliding panel assembly having an opaque sliding panel instead of a window panel.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A sliding panel assembly comprising a sliding panel mounted in a frame having a channel having its longitudinally-extending mouth open towards, to face in a direction transverse to, the plane of the panel, said channel having its longitudinal axis in the direction of sliding of the panel and having its opposed side faces situated in planes transverse to the plane of the panel, and there being provided, mounted on the panel, flanged means in the form of one or more members or devices having a flange or flanges slidingly engaged into the said channel to project between said opposed side faces of the channel whereby to prevent, or substantially to prevent, up or down tilting of the panel in its own plane.
