Separating by gravity; strainers having sheet straining - materials. - A sand or mud trap or strainer comprises a casing 1 with inlet 2 and one or more outlets 3, the casing being divided into compartments by baffles 6 fitted at the top with screens 5 and on the side towards the outlet with shelves 7, which serve as temporary resting-places for solid matter falling to the bottom of the general compartments. There may be primary screens 4 extending completely across the casing.
