Description
(54) COLLAPSIBLE BOX, TRAY OR LID AND BLANK THEREFOR
(71) We, REED INTERNATIONAL
LIMITED, a British company, of 82 Piccadilly, London W.1, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following state ment This invention relates to collapsible boxes, trays and lids and to blanks of cardboard, corrugated board or similar lightweight foldable material, for producing said boxes, trays and lids.
It is well known to produce boxes, trays and lids for boxes from a blank consisting of a rectangular base panel having side wall forming panels hingedly connected to each side of the base panel. It is customary to provide on one or both side wall panels which abut at a corner, a tab or flap which folds around the corner and is secured to the other of the side wall panels at that corner.
In order to provide a collapsible box, tray or lid, in which the side wall panels may be folded flat onto the base panel and subsequently erected prior to use, it is known to provide gusset fold lines extending from the corners along the side wall panels. Such boxes, trays and lids have the advantage that they can be delivered to the packer in their folded flat state, the packer then being able quickly to erect the boxes, trays or lids prior to packing.
After packing the boxes and trays are frequently covered with shrink wrapping. A disadvantage of known collapsible boxes, trays and lids, however, is that they have a tendency to recollapse after erection by the packer, with obvious undesirable results.
The object of the present invention is to provide a collapsible box, tray or lid having means for retaining the side walls in their erected positions.
According to the invention, there is provided a blank for a box, tray or lid having a rectangular base panel, a pair of opposed side wall panels and a pair of opposed end wall panels, each wall panel being hingedly connected to one side of the base panel, a gusset fold extending diagonally from each corner of the base panel to enable the box, tray or lid to be folded flat and readily erected, one of each pair of adjacent wall panels having a flap thereon which, when the box, tray or lid is assembled is secured to the other of the pair of adjacent wall panels, a projecting tongue being provided on the other of said pair of adjacent wall panels which tongue is arranged to extend through a slot in or adjacent the fold line between the base panel and said one of the pair of adjacent wall panels when the wall panels of the assembled box, tray or lid are folded flat and through a slot formed in or adjacent the fold line between said one of the pair of adjacent wall panels and said flap when the wall panels are erected.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a box, tray, or lid of cardboard, corrugated board or similar lightweight foldable material comprising a pair of opposed side wall panels and a pair of opposed end wall panels, each wall panel being hingedly connected to one side of the base panel, one of each pair of adjacent wall panels having a flap thereon which is secured to the outside of the other of the pair of adjacent wall panels, a gusset diagonal fold being provided on said flap to enable the box, tray or lid to be folded flat and readily erected, the other of each pair of adjacent wall panels having a projecting tongue arranged to extend through a slot in or adjacent the fold line between the base panel and said one of the pair of adjacent wall panels when the wall panels of the assembled box, tray or lid are folded flat, and through a slot in or adjacent the fold line between said one of the pair of adjacent wall panels and said flap when the wall panels are erected.
In a preferred form of the blank, either the side walls or the end walls each have a reinforcing panel connected to the top edge thereof, the reinforcing panels each being provided with one or more tabs adapted to extend through corresponding slots in the fold line between the wall panel to which it is connected and the base panel.
In the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification: figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment according to the invention of a blank for a collapsible tray;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of a tray made from the blank of Figure 1 in the erected state; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of a portion of the collapsible tray folded flat and partly broken away.
Figure 1 shows a corrugated cardboard blank for a collapsible tray and comprises a base panel 1, a pair of opposed side wall panels 2 and a pair of opposed end wall panels 3. The side and end wall panels 2, 3 are hingedly connected to the base panel 1.
Each end well panel 3 has a flap 4 at each end thereof hingedly connected thereto. When the tray is assembled, each flap 4 is secured to the outside of the adjacent side wall 2, for example by glueing.
A gusset fold line 5 extends from each corner of the base panel along each flap 4.
A projecting tongue 7 is provided on each end of each of the side wall panels 2. Slots 8 are provided at the junction of the base panel and the end wall panel 3 and a slot 9 is provided adjacent each fold line between a flap 4 and an end wall panel 3. Arcuate relieving cuts 10 are provided on each side of each of the slots 8, 9. The arrangement of the tongues, slots and relieving cuts is such that when the assembled tray is folded flat each tongue 7 will extend through slot 8 (as shown in Figure 3), and when the tray is erected, the tongue 7 will extend through slot 9 (as shown in Figure 2). Relieving cuts 10 assist in the movement of tongue 7 from slot 8 to slot 9 without causing damage to the tongue 7.
The blank further comprises side wall reinforcing panels 11, each connected to a side wall panel 2 via a pair of fold lines. Each panel 11 is provided with a air of tabs 12 which extend through slots 3 adjacent the fold line between the side wall panel and the base panel when the tray is assembled and the panels 11 are folded downwardly along the inside of panels 2.
In use, the blank is assembled by glueing flaps 4 to the outside of the ends of panels 2.
The tray is then folded flat by folding the panels 2 inwardly against the base panel 1 and folding the end panels 3 over the side panels 2. In this state the tongues 7 extend through slots 8. When the tray is to be packed, the side and end panels are erected, and the tongues 7 enter the slots 9. This engagement of the tongues 7 in the slot 9 produces a stable tray in which the side and end walls are restrained from collapsing again, into the folded state. Additional rigidity is given to the tray by folding panels 11 inside panels 2, and inserting the tabs 12 in their respective slots 13. The tray can then be packed and, if desired, shrink wrapped.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
