( 54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CONTAINER RACKS ( 71) We, DAN GURNEY CYCLE PRODUCTS, a corporation organised under the laws of the State of California, United States of America, of 1501 East McFadden Avenue, Santa Ana, California 92705, United States of America, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:-
The present invention relates to a container rack.
According to the present invention there is provided a container rack comprising a frame having means for attaching the frame to means for carrying the frame, and lockable means for locking a container to the frame, the frame having a triangular shaped periphery In one embodiment, the frame is tubular in cross-section However, the periphery of the frame may take other shapes, such as square or rectangular, and the crosssectional profile of the frame need not be tubular Preferably, the frame is a continuous, unbroken structure but this is not essential.
The lockable means preferably comprises means for locking a container side wall in or on the frame In one embodiment, the lockable means comprises a male means for lockably engaging complementary means in a container side wall This male means may be one or more pins, and these pins may be tumbler actuable.
The means for carrying the frame may comprise a vehicle which may be, for example, a monoped, a bicycle, a motorcycle, or any other wheeled vehicle that does not embody adequate storage or carrying space.
A container side wall structure can be provided which comprises a protrusion in the side wall of a container, the protrusion defining a groove arrangement adapted to engage the frame of the container rack The protrusion is provided with means for lockably engaging the frame with the groove arrangement engaging the complementary frame Where the protrusion protrudes outwardly from the container side wall, and defines a groove arrangement between at least a portion of the periphery of the protrusion and the container side wall, and the protrusion is of triangular shape and de 55 fines a V-shaped groove arrangement whose apex points downwardly, the frame complementary to the protrusion is triangular shaped, and has its apex pointing downwardly The peripheral edge of the frame 60 must be of sufficient size to fit snugly within the groove arrangement of the container side wall.
The container side wall structure may be provided with means for lockably engag 65 ing the frame of the container rack when the groove arrangement is engaged with the frame The means for lockably engaging the complementary frame may comprise female means formed in the protrusion of the con 70 tainer side wall, the female means comprising in one example, at least one opening in the upper portion of said protrusion.
The container rack and the container side wall are preferably complementary In one 75 embodiment, upon engagement of the groove arrangement in the container side wall structure with the frame of the container rack, and of the lockable means in the container rack frame with the means for lockably 80 engaging that frame, the container side wall structure may be locked within the container rack.
Where both the protrusion and the periphery of the frame are of triangular shape, 85 the lockable means of the container rack is affixed to the base, or upper portion of the rack, opposite the apex of the triangle.
The protrusion in the container side wall has a complementary triangular shape, with 90 the apex of the protrusion pointing downwardly with respect to the side wall The upper or base portion ofthe protrusion includes means opposite the apex of the triangle for lockably engaging the frame 95 Thus, with the groove arrangement defined by the side wall protrusion seated on or within the frame, the lockable frame means and the means for lockably engaging the frame may cooperate to prevent the frame 100 1 590 142 1 590 142 from disengaging the grooves.
If the protrusion in the container side wall structure does not protrude from the side wall, but protrudes into the container itself, a groove is defined between the periphery of the opening in the plane of the side wall and the outer surface of the protrusion itself Where the protrusion is of triangular shape, the container rack frame will be formed with its apex facing inwardly, and with its lockable means formed at the base of the triangle Similarly, the lockable means on the container rack frame may be female, provided those on the protrusion are male.
The invention will now be described in more detail, solely by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container mounted on the rear of a motorcycle by means of a container rack embodying the present invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view of the continer side wall structure and the container rack of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an end view of the container engaged with the container rack of Figures 1 and 2, in which a portion of the container side wall and of the container rack are broken away to illustrate engagement of the frame of the container rack with the groove in the container side wall structure; Figure 4 is a side elevation view of the container side wall structure in engagement with the container rack of Figures 1 and 2; Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along lines 5-5 in the direction of the arrows of Figure 4; and Figure 6 is an end view of the container side wall structure and the container rack of Figures 1 and 2 disengaged from one another, with a portion of the container rack cut away to illustrate its tubular crosssectional profile.
Referring now in greater detail to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a luggage piece 1 having a container side wall structure, which cannot be seen in Figure 1, and mounted upon the rear of a motorcycle 2.
Referring now to Figure 2, the luggage piece 1 includes a side wall 3 which comprises a protrusion 10, of triangular shape.
Figure 3 shows that the protrusion 10 is integrally formed in the side wall 3 of the luggage piece 1, and that its apex 33 points downwardly toward the bottom of the luggage piece 1.
In the base or upper portion 34 of the triangular protrusion 10, there is a generally square or rectangular well 35 integrally formed in the protrusion 10 A plate 11, which may be made of rigid plastics material or metal, is anchored in the well 35 by means of rivets 12, 13, 26 and 27 (see also Figure 4) Centered in the plate 11 is an opening 28 which constitutes part of the means for lockably engaging male locking means 14.
As best seen in Figure 5, a second plate 70 36 is anchored within the well 35 and below the plate 11 by means of rivets 12, 13, 26 and 27 which pass through both of the plates 11 and 36 and are secured within the container side wall 3 The plate 36 includes 75 an integrally formed depression 37 which together with the opening 28 in the plate 11 defines means for lockably engaging a tumbler actuated pin 15 of the locking means 14 Alterantively, the plate 36 may 80 be welded or otherwise attached to the plate 11, thereby obviating the ned for the rivets to pass through the plate 36.
Referring again to Figures 4 and 5, it can be seen that the container rack com 85 prises a frame 6 which comprises means 4, 16, 17, and 18 for attaching the frame 6 to the means for carrying and moving the frame about which in the present example is the motorcycle 2 The means 4, 16, 17 90 and 18 may be fixedly attached to struts 5, 21, 19 and 20 by means of bolts 7, 8, 22, 23, 24 and 25, the struts being secured to the motorcycle 2 The frame 6 is tubular in cross-section, triangular in shape, and 95 has its apex pointing downwardly to facilitate engagement of the frame 6 with a groove 9 formed between the periphery of the protrusion 10 and the container side wall 3 The groove 9 is substantially V 100 shaped.
As best seen in Figures 3 and 6, the container 1 is mounted in the container rack by passing the protrusion 10 through the plane defined by the frame 6, and then 105 seating the groove 9, with the apex 33 of the protrusion 10 pointing downwardly toward the apex of the frame 6, until the groove 9 is seated snugly within the frame 6 Thereafter, the locking means 14 is 110 actuated, here by means of a key 29, which operates on a tumbler (not shown) and moves the pin 15 downwardly through a bushing or sleeve (not shown) in the frame 6 and through the opening 29 into the space 115 formed between the plates 11 and 36 by the depression 37 The pin 15 protrudes through the opening 28 sufficiently far to ensure that the groove 9 cannot be disengaged from the frame 6 because upward 120 movement of the container side wall structure is blocked by the interaction of the pin and the plate 36.
Matter described hereinbefore is described and claimed in application No 31373/77 125 (Serial No 1 590 141).
