Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS 1N OR RELATING TO CONTAINER RACKS AND CONTAINERS FOR VEHICLES (71) We, DAN GURNEY CYCLE PRODUCTS, a corporation organised under the laws of the State of California, United States of America, of 1501 East McFadden Avenue, Santa Ana, California 92705, United States of America, do hereby declare the invention, for which we prau that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following state ment : - This invention provides a combination of a container for holding articles and a frame adapted to be mounted on a vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a combination of a container for holding articles and a frame adapted to be mounted on a vehicle, the container being openable to provide access to a space in the container, and having a wall adjacent the said space which carries a protruding structure projecting outwardly from the wall in a predetermined direction and away from the said space, and the container being removably connectable to the said frame; the said frame forming a recess dimensioned to permit movement of the said protruding structure into and out of the said recess, and to permit movement of the said protruding structure while in the said recess in a direction transversely of the said direction in which the protruding structure projects, and to a retained position; the said protruding structure and the said frame having inter-engageable portions which extend along two sides of the said protruding structure and recess and converge toward one another as they advance in the said transverse direction and which form shoulders interfitting in the said retained position of the protruding structure in a relation which blocks movement of the protruding structure out of the said recess, and means being provided for releasably preventing the movement of the said protruding structure relative to the said frame in a direction the reverse of the said transverse direction and from the said retained position and thereby holding the said container against removal from the frame.
In one embodiment, the frame is tubular in cross-section, and its periphery is triangular in shape. However, the periphery of the frame may take other shapes, such as square or rectangular, and the cross-sectional profile of the frame need not be tubular. Preferably, the frame is a continuous, unbroken structure but this is not essential.
The frame may have lockable means for locking a container side wall in or on the frame. In one embodiment, the lockable means comprises a male means for lockably engaging complementary means in a container side wall. This male means may be one or more pins, and these pins may be tumbler actuable.
The frame mav be adapted to be mounted on, for example, a monoped, a bicycle, a motorcycle, or any other wheeled vehicle that does not embody adequate storage or carrying space.
Preferably, the protruding structure defines a groove arrangement adapted to engage means for lockably engaging the frame where the groove arrangement engages the frame. In one embodiment, the protruding structure defines a groove arrangement between at least a portion of the periphery of the protruding structure and the container wall. In a preferred embodiment, the protruding structure is of triangular shape, and defines a substantially V-shaped groove arrangement whose apex points downwardly.
The frame complementary to the preferred protruding structure is triangular, and has its apex pointing downwardly. The peripheral edge of the frame must be of sufficient size to fit snugly within the groove arrangement.
The protruding structure preferably comprises means for lockably engaging the frame where the groove arrangement of the protrusion means seat within the frame. In one embodiment, the means for lockably engaging the complementary frame comprises female means formed in the protruding structure. In the preferred embodiment, the female means comprises at least one opening in the upper portion of the protruding structure. The preferred triangular shaped protruding structure has the base portion of the triangle, which forms the upper portion, facing upwardly.
Upon engagement of the groove arrangement with the frame, and of the lockable means in the frame with the means for lockably engaging the frame which is embodied in the container wall structure, the container wall structure may be locked within the frame.
In the preferred embodiment of this combination, where both the protruding structure and the periphery of the frame are triangular shaped and complementary, and the lockable means of the frame is affixed to the base, or upper portion opposite the apex of the triangle. The upper or base portion of the protruding structure includes means opposite the apex of the triangle for lockably engaging the frame. Thus, with a groove arrangement defined by the protruding structure seated on or within the frame, the lockable means of the frame and the means for lockably engaging the frame may cooperate to prevent the frame from disengaging the groove arrangement.
The invention will now be described in more detail, solely by way of example, with reference to the accompanYing drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container mounted on the rear of a motorcycle, Figure 2 is a perspective view of a combination embodying the present invention and comprising a piece of luggage engaging a frame adapted to be mounted on the motorcycle of Figure 1, Figure 3 is an end view of the piece of luggage of Figures 1 and 2 engaged with the frame of Figure 2, portions of the side wall of the piece of luggage and the frame being broken away to illustrate engagement of the frame with a groove in a protruding side wall structure of the piece of luggage.
Figure 4 is a side elevation view of the combination of Figure taken 2, Figure 5 is a sectional view taken at lines 5-5 in the direction of the arrows 5-5 in Figure A, and Figure 6 is an end view of the protruding side wall structure of Figure 3 and of the frame disengaged from one another, a portion of the frame being cut away to illustrate its tubular cross-sectional profile.
Referring now in greater detail to the drawings, in Figure 1 a luggage piece 1 having a protruding side wall structure is mounted upon the rear of a motorcycle 2.
Figure 2 shows-that the luggage piece 1 includes a side wall 3 with a protruding structure 10 of triangular shape. Figure 3 shows that the structure 10 is integrally formed in the side wall 3 of the luggage piece 1, and that its apex 33 points downwardly toward the bottom of the luggage piece 1.
Integrally formed in the base or upper portion 34 of triangular protruding structure 10, there is a generally square or rectangular well 35. A plate 11, which may be made of rigid plastics material or metal, is anchored in the well 35 by means of rivets 12, 13, 26 and 27 (see also Figure 4). Centered in the plate 11 is an opening 28 which constitutes part of means for lockably engaging male locking means 14 provided on a frame 6.
As best seen in Figure 5, a second plate 36 is anchored within well 35 and below plate 11 by means of rivets 12, 13, 26 and 27 which pass through both of the plates 11 and 36 and are secured within the container side wall 3. The plate 36 includes an integrally formed depression 37 which together with the opening 28 in plate 11 defines the means for lockably engaging a pin 15. Alternatively, the plate 36 may be welded or otherwise attached to the plate 11, obviating the need for the rivets to pass through the plate 36. The pin 15 is part of the lockable means 14 and is actuated by a tumbler (not shown) which is also part of the lockable means 14.
Referring again to Figures 4 and 5, it can be seen that a container rack is formed by the frame 6 which has attachment members 4, 16, 17 and 18 for attaching the frame 6 to the motorcycle 2. The attachment members 4, 16, 17 and 18 may be fixedly attached to struts $, 21, 19 and 20 secured to the motorcycle by means of bolts 7, 8, 22, 23, '24 and 25. The frame 6 is tubular in cross-section, triangular in shape, and has its apex pointing downwardly to facilitate engagement of the frame 6 with a groove 9 formed between the periphery of the protruding structure 10 and the container side wall 3. The groove 9 is substantially Vshaped.
As best seen in Figures 3 and 6, the luggage piece 1 is mounted in the container ra.ck by passing the protruding structure 10 through the plane defined by the frame 6, and then seting the groove 9, with the apex 33 pointing downwardly toward the apex of the frame 6 until the groove 9 is seated snugly within the frame 6. Thereafter the lockable means 14 is actuated, here by means of a key 29, which operates to move the pin 15 downwardly through a bushing or sleeve (not shown) in the frame 6 and into the space below the opening 29 formed between the plates 11 and 36. The pin 15 protrudes into this space sufficiently far to ensure that the groove 9 cannot be disengaged from the frame 6 because upward movement of the protruding structure 10 is blocked by the interaction of the pin 15 and the plate 36.
Matter described hereinbefore is described and claimed in application no.
